If it's tough to stomach spending a good chunk of change on a gorgeous crib or a comfy glider, it may be doubly painful to add a $300 breast pump to an expectant mother's checklist. Many women choose to rent a pump instead of purchasing their own as the item is nonrefundable and pricey. If used enough, however, families might reap the financial benefits of storing breast milk.

My sister got me mine for my shower, and was very grateful. My boyfriend now husband just couldn't understand why I would want to spend $300 on a pump, he didn't realize that it would pay for itself vs the cost of buying formula.
1I actually bought 2. I kept one at home, and one at the office. Expensive, yes, but it kept me from lugging it back and forth, and the inevitable forgetting it somewhere. Mommy-brain is very real, people!
2I couldn't possibly imagine renting one....that just doesn't seem right....mine was given to me for my shower.
3don't be silly - there's nothing wrong with renting one. they are different units, hospital grade ones that have all the pieces that touch breast milk exterior so they can be sanitized. what is really wrong is when people get a second-hand regular grade unit thinking they can clean it, and i know people do it.
4I was given one (actually the same model in the picture) as a "hand me down". If you buy new parts, basically all the parts that touch the breasts including the tubing it isn't like what anonymous said. I also gave the pump to a new young mom and purchased the parts for her. The parts alone are like $90 but it is such a good pump. Hopefully she'll have more kids or pass it on in the same tradition.
5I have the Avent Isis to use while I pump at home and my PISa stays at work. I have been exclusively breastfeeding my son for a months now. I could definitely use an upgrade!
6I bought a really expensive Medela Pump 'N Style and then ended up not being able to breastfeed (a preemie combined with a VERY low supply). I pumped for a while and supplemented with formula until I realized that I was missing tons of bonding with my son while I sat and pumped with a machine. We switched to exclusive formula and made mom and baby much happier!
7I bought one for my first and used it through him and my second, then bought another for my third. Considering the first went through two years of pumping three times a day M-F, I got more than my money's worth, so I bought the same model again. And you can sterilize the parts that touch the milk or just buy a whole new outer set for a lot less than a new pump.
Renting can be very effective as well.
