Students in New York Elementary Schools will no longer receive traditional letter grades — A, B, C, D, and F — to evaluate their performance. A new grading system assigns a number — 1, 2, 3, or 4 — to assess the student's skill set. Across the nation, numerous schools have adapted to the standard-based report card system. As a parent, what's your opinion?

This isn't really news. My mom is a teacher in New York and she has been giving number grades for years. Even before the number system elementary school kids didn't really get grades. It was Excellent, Good, Satisfactory and Needs Improvement. When I was growing up in New York I didn't get letter grades until middle school.
1I really don't see how it's any different. The woman in the video says she prefers it because "My child is not competing for A's". That's because they're competing for 4's now. Obviously...
2they do this at my girls school, until 3rd grade when the kids start getting letter grades. i don't see the point. and if you don't learn the material (you've heard it before) you're just hurting yourself.
3What is the difference, other than an A is the highest grade and a 4 is the highest grade.
4i've been giving 1, 2, 3, & 4 as grades for my elementary students for years... our upstate ny school district decided on that.
54 means 'consistently exceeds grade level expectations' so technically a 3 is an A equivalent. you can guess parents expect their kids to get all 4's though. it causes quite a problem.
My daugters school uses P's, M's, and E's. P=progress noted towards goal, M=meets expectations, and E=exceeds expectations. Expectation may not be the exact wording, but my daughter loves to see all the M's and the E's. So it is no different than if it were A's and B's. You don't want your kid getting C's and D's and in my case P's.
6My children's school uses M (Mastery) C (Competent), P (Proficient), PP (Partially Proficient) as grades. They go to a charter school with a curriculum that demands they demonstrate they've mastered a subject before moving on.
