Cupcakes Move Beyond the Bakery

While Sex and the City may take credit for putting the lonely cupcake back on the bakery scene, their ongoing popularity among the school-age set cannot be denied. Toy designers have taken notice of lil ones' affinity for these treats and are introducing toy versions that should keep them playing for hours. Step2, long known as the king of large outdoor play items, is introducing a line of adorable preschool toys including these Shape 'n Sort Cupcakes with interchangeable frosting tops, ribbons and cups ($10), while by the end of Summer Melissa and Doug will start selling a version with frosting that can be written on with a dry erase marker and Haba, one of our favorite overseas brands, will be expanding their confectionery line with felt crepes and tarts.
