American Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Institute advises:
Do not place your baby to sleep in an adult bed. Typical adult beds are not safe for babies. Do not fall asleep with your baby on a couch or in a chair.

There has been much reason done on SIDS in co-sleeping. Basically, co-sleeping does not raise the risk of SIDS AT ALL unless the mother smoked during pregnancy.
On the other hand, co-sleeping enables a better breast-feeding relationship and more bonding. Children who co-slept with their parents show more mental health even through their college years. There is much data on this if you just look.
Shame on governmental agencies trying to make parents afraid to co-sleep with their children and shame on sugar for printing the same malarkey.
