Mommy Dearest,
This weekend, I am having my baby-to-be's car seat installed by a police officer. Once the task is completed, should I tip him? I feel awkward not offering something for the service. What is the appropriate thank you?

To Tip or Not To Tip,
Since police officers, firefighters and highway patrol officers are all considered public servants, my inkling was that a tip would be inappropriate, but I called the California Highway Patrol Office to inquire. The officer confirmed that installing car seats during the work shift is part of daily business and the job. Officers cannot accept monetary gratuities. That said, you should feel no obligation to offer anything, but something like a cookie or beverage would probably be alright as it's considered normal human interaction.

I don't think you are legally allowed to tip a police officer---ever.
He was doing his job.
I think if you took some cookies or candy to the police station as a thank you, that would be fine.
1Offer him a beer!
2It would never have occurred to me to tip the person who installed my carseat, especially a police officer or fireman.
3haha! Greggie I clicked on the link to put the same comment you did. Great minds again
4why would you want to offer him a beer?
5If he/she is working and installing safety items
do you really want him to be having any kind of drink?
Some law enforcement agencies have charitable type services. Some police officers keep new stuffed toys in their vehicles in case they have a call involving a child. Some also have PAL booster organziations that work with youths. Maybe call in advance and see if there is some donation you could make as a thank you.

7I meant it as a joke.
...and obviously you'd offer him the beer AFTER he'd installed the carseat. Before would just be wrong- he hadn't done anything yet!
8Donuts...hello!!!
9Ohhhhhhh. Even better, cherrygirl!
10I understood it as sarcasm but there are a lot of people who read through the comments and wouldnt
11Why not bust out a beer for him, yourself, and the baby
