Halloween is supposed to be a spooky fun holiday for kids to indulge in freaky activities and gather sugary goodies. The fright night gives parents enough issues to fret about — fire hazards, getting lost, candy and street safety to name a few. I'm also concerned about predators. It's the perfect time for offenders to steal a glance at unsuspecting children.

Some states require registered sex offenders turn off their porch lights and place a sign in the window saying, "No candy or treats at this residence." To trick-or-treat on the safe side, I looked up the homes of registered sex offenders on Family Watchdog. Just type in the zip code where you plan on trick-or-treating and see which houses your family should avoid.

Thanks for posting this! I just found out there's one about two blocks from my house. Yeah, won't be trick or treating at THAT place.
1I keep hearing people say they won't trick or treat because you don't know who you might run into, and I think this site is wonderful to help out with that. I personally am more comfortable with stuff like this and checking before TorTing than I am with going to something like a church/community gathering where anyone can show up.
2And I agree on thank you for posting this, it's incredibly important information.
3Has there been any research on this being a legitimate, proven site? A few months ago everyone was making a huge deal about another website that did the same thing, and it turned out to be a complete fake. Although I very much want to keep kids away from offenders, I also don't want innocent people being labeled because some Google map said so.
4It's not a google map website. FamilyWatchdog, from what I've seen, is a highly reputable site.
5wow thanks so much for posting this! I found about 3 a few blocks from the house and 1 where my daughter gets dropped off from school.
6In California you can go to http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov/
Its the government listing of the sex offenders
I always take my little sisters trick or treating and I may seem totally paranoid but I always stand like 4 steps behind them. Most people in my neighboorhood stand on the sidewalk.
I would rather be safe than sorry, is my opinion
7Family Watchdog is a reliable site. It's often cited on newscasts. Fortunately we live close to a school and a playground so we have a buffer zone.
8I actually already went on this site,my local news was talking about it the other day, I am so freaked out to know that sex offenders live so close to my house.
thanks for posting this. the scary thing is what if people don't visit this website and go
to the houses, how are the police going to know that they were participating?
I
really don't know too much about it
9In my town they have Pretty much every cop on the force driving around everywhere and patroling everything. There are about 90,000 people in my town so thats a lot of area to cover lol
10Thanks for posting this. I've already checked it out!
11Thanks for posting this. I've already checked it out!
12This is also a useful tool if you are moving! Thanks - babysugar.
13Thanks for this. Happy to find no red squares on our planned route.
14This is very informative and helpful
15I like that you can see where they work also, will be avoiding those businesses.
16Ours doesn't show place of work for our area. I'm guessing California also doesn't have a law about them not living within a certain range of schools, either. There's like 5 within a block of my husband's school, which makes me very sad.
17Most sex offenders don't want to pass out candy on Halloween. But none want a sign in their yard saying no candy here. If I see such a sign in anybody's yard, I will remove it. Any State that passes a law requiring sex offenders to have such a sign is wrong. Another thing is wrong is that damn Adam Walsh Act. The Adam Walsh Act is a violation of the United States Constitution and it should be shoved up John Walsh's ass. John Walsh should not be allowed to strongarm the government like he did. You want to protect your children; keep your damn children off the internet and don';t give your damn children cell phones. Nobody under 18 should be allowed on websites like myspace and tagged. They should pass a law that nobody under 16 should be allowed on a computer without direct adult supervision and nobody under 16 should be allowed to have a cell phone. It should be a misdemeanor for any kid under 16 who is caught using a cell phone or is caught using a computer without supervision. The way to protect your children is to supervise them 24 seven. Supervising registered sex offenders don't protect your children from people not on the registry. People not on the registry are the ones most likely to harm your children. Use your brains, Idiots.
18Joel Steele is right.
