Women of all different shapes and sizes gain varying amounts of weight when expecting. Milla Jovovich wrote on her official site that she gained nearly 70 pounds in the first seven months of pregnancy. Kate Hudson also gained about the same amount of weight during her pregnancy with Ryder. She told Vogue:
I would be eating ice cream and my mom would literally pry the spoon away from me, saying, 'You've had enough to last you a lifetime.
While many other factors play a part in a woman's scale increase, the average recommended weight gain during pregnancy is generally somewhere between 25 and 35 pounds. I gained 38 pounds with my first child and I may max out at 40 pounds with the second while my teeny relative only packed on a mere 12 pounds to her petite frame.
Tell mommy, how much weight did you gain during your pregnancy?

Which pregnancy? My first was about 25 lbs, my second was probably just over 30, and my last was about 17.
1I gained about 35 and I looked and felt fine with it, but next time I'd love to keep it more around 25.
2The first time it was 30, second time it was 12 and the last time it was 20, I was fine with each amount. I usually lost a few before I started gaining it though. Morning sickness was a b!tch for me.
3Yeah, losing is the only reason I put on less overall with my last. I lost like 20 lbs in the first half of the pregnancy. Then I lose it all in the two months after giving birth, and then I put on double what I lost because I can't stop eating. *lol*
4I have questions...I've read that you're supposed to keep your caloric intake the same for the first trimester and not gain weight and then during the second trimester you increase your intake by about 200-300 calories? Is this actually feasible? Practical?
5I gained 30 with each. I lost all but 5 pounds after my daughter, but I'm still packing 15 from my son...and he's nearing two!
6I gained 55 with my daughter and 23 with my son.
7facin8, I never looked at it that way with mine. I ate when I could the first trimester, and generally just did what sounded good so I didn't get sicker. Aside from having gestational diabetes with my first, I had no real diet restrictions as long as my weight stayed under control. Oh and I had to totally eliminate caffeine the last few weeks with my third when I had heart problems.
8I forgot to add - I think what you describe is ideal and certainly a goal, it's just that for me it wasn't at all realistic.
9my first child-50 lbs-i wore my maternity clothes for months after
my second child-23 lbs-i was back in my regular jeans 6 days after i had him...
my last child- 19 lbs-i think i wore my yoga pants and a t-shirt for 3 months after...trying to keep up with 3 kids 4 and under...i just didn't care..
10Less than 10 with each child. Severe morning sickness made it hard to gain weight. I just couldn't eat much of anything. Not a problem for me normally. Nursing always made me super hungry so I ended up gaining weight after each pregnancy.
11With my first pregnancy (twins), I gained 50 lbs and had to work long and hard to lose the last 15. This time around (twins again), I'm working hard to make it more like 40 lbs. I don't know if it's the weight, but I've felt much better during the 2nd pregnancy. Less stiffness, soreness, and fatigue.
12I'm with Mommy of Three. I've never been more hungry than when I was nursing.
13Bless your heart, Fsquaash! You have my respect with two sets of multiples soon! My cousin also has two sets of twins, it's amazing how that works. I hope it goes well for you!
On topic, I haven't been pregnant yet, but I would like to be soon, so i wanted to see what the typical gain was.
14I'm ravenously hungry the first six months of nursing. It tapers off the second six months, and by the time they're over a year I'm good to diet and not feel deprived.
15Thanks for your personal perspective Greggie. I think I'm trying to figure out how realistic the ideals are on this matter.
16I actually lost nearly 40lbs during my first pregnancy...my delivery weight was less than my pre-pregnancy weight, and then within a week after delivery, I was nearly 40#'s lighter.
This time, I'm up about 17#'s at 27 weeks.
17i only gained 14 durning my pregnancy. i was 10lbs lighter than when i started a couple of weeks later. it turned out i had actually lost a lot of weight while pregnant(being overweight and suddenly eating very healthy will do that), but took on a bunch of water. *nothing* fit at that point. i ended up losing another 15 while breastfeeding, but sadly, put all of it back on before her first birthday.
i had lots of friends who set a goal of their baby's first birthday as a target for getting rid of their baby-weight. didn't realize i'd be there, too
18I haven't been pregnant yet, but I have some pretty serious back problems that may be permanently worsened by carrying additional weight. My back doctor said that a max weight gain of 20 pounds would be best for my small frame (I weigh 105 now).
19(he said that about pregnancy, not weight gain in general - I'm supposed to avoid that! Ha.)
20I started out only gaining 5 bounds for the first 6 months, but then I was put on bedrest and gained 25 more!!! I was in shock what help the little bit of exercise I was doing actually did! I cursed my Dr for weeks when he first told me, "not even to cook dinner."
21Holy cow...you don't even have a box that will work for me...I gained a whopping 80lbs with my daughter...Of course, I lost it all, actually plus some more, and I actually lost 40lbs of it right away because I was retaining water...blah...pregnancy is no fun!
22I'm 28 weeks and have gained exactly 20 pounds. So I basically have 10 weeks left and am going to very much try to limit the weight gain to an add'l 10 pounds.
Anything more than that sounds like WAY too much work to take off.
23I'll be 24 weeks on Sunday and I've gained 15 lbs so far. I think I'm pretty much on track, but I've been struggling not to eat too much junk food.... but then I did just polish off a bowl of ice cream about 5 minutes ago. LOL!
24I gained 50 with my first and 40 with my second. I hate that I gained so much each time. I didn't overeat either. And with my 2nd I ate relatively healthy. I have no clue what happened.
25That's a sweet burn to anyone who gained over 50 lbs. You're not even included in the poll. I gained 60 the first time and 40 the last two.
26I gained 39 I think with my son. Unfortunately I still have around 20 of it left a year later. But dang it I don't have the time or the energy to do real exercise and everytime I try and diet I fail cuz I like to eat. *sigh*
27I gained 35 pounds. Not bad but I felt like the Goodyear blimp because I was soooo bloated. And being 5'3" I wabbled like a Penguin
Flip flops left indentation marks on the tops of my feet. I lost 22 pounds within a month after giving
birth. Lots of it I swear was fluid because I was sweating profusely in the middle of the night.
28don't remember, lol. i do remember stepping on the scale at the hospital the day after my first, and one nurse saying to aother "why do all of these moms step on the scale thinking they will magically have lost all the weight", as if i wasn't standing there on the scale, puffy, exhausted, pulling my iv around after me
when i lost the weight it was almost all at once, about 3 or 4 weeks out it just melted off of me.
29I'm 9 weeks and so far gained 5 pounds which is already more than the 2-4 recommended for your ENTIRE first trimester. I'm thinking that their recommendations are a little crazy b/c I've been sick a bit and not eating nearly as much as normal but eating more bland carbs b/c that's pretty much all I can stomach AND still gaining weight....what gives???
30over 80 pounds with the first one and 25 with the second.
31I gained 35 with my first. I lost it all within 5 months of her birth. And I've since lost more. Now, I'm pregnant again, and I will eat when I'm hungry and not try to keep my weight gain to any specific number.
I think some people gain more, some people gain less and putting an arbitrary number to how much you're "supposed" to gain is silly. Obviously, pregnancy should not be a free ticket to eat whatever the heck you want, but as long as you're eating healthy and your health is good, don't worry about the weight!
32I agree, luckyme. I also feel bad that the poll makes it look like anything over 50 shouldn't even be mentioned.
People handle both weight gain and weight loss so differently, just do what's acceptable to you and your doctor. A lot of things matter more than the flat number.
33i'm so glad to see some women on here who LOST weight during pregnancy. i am 17 weeks pregnant and haven't gained a pound yet due to some health problems and surgery 2 weeks ago. i have been super paranoid that i am harming the baby by not gaining more but due to nausea and 2 hospital stays with liquid diets my appetite is so screwed up and i just can't eat as much i should! i am working hard on catching up though
3442 lbs. I probably would have made it to 50 if it weren't for all of the morning sickness in the beginning!
35I gained 42lbs the first baby, I had lost 22 of that when I got pregnant again I only gained 26. I'm STILL trying to lose 30lbs now, 3.5 years later. My best friend had a baby 2 weeks ago and she's in her old clothes already. It's inspiring.. and irritating.
36i think it's GREAT to read this... thanks to everyone for sharing. i gained 32 lbs... and i gave myself til his first birthday to get back to my pre weight... and i think i've done it (i've got til thursday and i probably shouldnt have had that egg sandwich this mornin haha) but now i'd like to get back to my prehusband weight... i may just have to wire my mouth shut.
37I don't give myself a deadline for losing it. I figure that first year, I have way more important things to worry about. I'm not saying someone shouldn't concentrate on it, I'm just saying that for me personally, the first year isn't where I do it.
38I was overweight when I got pregnant with my first daugther, and ended up losing like 40 pounds becuase I took on alot more activity.. I never put it back on, but they werent worried as everything was measuring correctly and i didnt have any issues with my blood/urine tests.
39I marked 40-50 but honestly I gained around 95.
I just went to town being pregs. I was a little underweight because i was a runner and now I have maintained at about 20lbs heavier than I was before being pregs.
40I only gained 12lbs with my first child, 10 with my second and currently i am 10lbs under at 30wks... 'all day sickness' is the trade off for the low weight gain and quick loss
41I gained 65 pounds with my first pregnancy. I'm 6 weeks pregnant with my second child now, and I've already put on 3 pounds. I'm eating healthy and less than most people eat regularly, so I'm really frustrated. Two years after giving birth, I was down to a healthy 133 lbs, but it took the whole two years. I'm not ready to gain again, but my body seems to have a mind of it's own!
