not really, but they just dont eat too much in general

I've never been allowed to (I'm 15, and almost done but refusing to stop trick-or-treating)-
some people we know have 'Halloween Fairies' like the tooth fairy that come and take candy an leave a small toy.

I let them have a small amount - maybe one piece every other day. Usually the candy lasts until Christmas, then I just get rid of it. Because of the amount they get, we send at least half with my husband to work, he gives it to the receptionist to put out for everyone.

as long as you check the candy and don't let them overdo it I think its fine! One or two pieces each day after dinner isn't a bad thing and it makes the candy last!!

No they don't eat the candy they get from other people, we swap it out with organic chocolate and candy. It works for us, it's a good compromise.

I always got to eat candy and as much as I wanted. After a few years of bellyaches I learned to spread out the loot. With safety being such an issue, going door to door is somewhat dying in our town. Many churches host parties, our mall has a trick or treat, and so does our event center.
This year we're taking our 2 year old to the pioneer museum that he have here and they have all those old time activities.

I always just spread it out, not all at once. That's part of the fun. It's checked over, nothing open or weird looking gets eaten. And we throw out any candy that we don't LOVE, that way we just have the really good stuff left!

In bits and pieces for a week or so, then we put it away and they forget about it. We save some of it for goody bags for my son's party in the beginning of Dec and the rest my husband brings to work and puts in the break room.

Checking it is definitely the most important part! I'm sure the majority of candy we throw out is just in there by accident, but you never know. Sometimes those big "bargain bags" contain some really weird stuff. Besides, my stepdaughter is picky and ends up liking only about a third of what she gets anyways, haha.

I never realized that so many people don't let their children eat halloween candy. Why go trick or treating if you aren't going to eat the candy? I just bought my first house and I was really excited about having trick or treaters this year. However, after reading these posts I don't even think I'm going to hand out candy since most people seem to throw it out anyway.

yep....after hubs and i sort thru it...the kids each pick out 2 pieces that nite to have and the rest goes into the cookie jar and plastic bags. i sort out the chocolate candy and seperate it. then i put all of those into a big baggie and freeze them. so for any reason i have chocolate for baking, or for company. i don't care for chocolate....so i'm lucky that way! then my hubby will take small baggies to work and share with the guys. but you gotta remember....we have 3 kids trick or treating here....LOTS of candy gets bought in...

This is my daughter's first year she'll be going trick-or-treating, and I'm going to let her have some of it. It's not going to be a LOT, maybe a piece or two every couple of days for a week or so. She gets candy now, but I don't let her overdo it. The rest of her Halloween candy will go in a bag for special treats. I don't really see the point of letting her get the candy, and then not be able to eat any of it!!

I agree with Smilesp, never knew so many people took the fun out of Halloween and what a waste too of perfectly good candy.

Paranoia also seem common among parents here, everything gets checked, sorted, divided, 2 candies after dinner for 3 nights....

Nothing wrong with having your kid binge on candy one night of the year!

Sure there is. There may be nothing wrong with having YOUR child binge once a year, but the result isn't worth it for everyone. It's also not paranoia to check the candy when you live in an area that has had previous problems, or have encountered problems before. I personally don't do more than a basic check, but I don't think going through it thoroughly is paranoid.

It doesn't take the fun out of Halloween for us. My kids love Trick or Treating, they don't care that they don't get to binge on the candy. They pick out some favorites, like having some left over to have for a few days, and don't even notice when it's gone.

God forbid people celebrate the holiday in different manners, or not celebrate it at all. It's like expecting everyone to teach their kids about Santa.

sarana-the reasoning behind the 2 pieces is because we get home around 7-8 at nite.....no need for too much candy that late at nite! also....the kids need to learn...not all at once!

we used to go crazy with the candy we got trick or treating and we turned out fine with my niece and nephew we give them a few that nite, and then a couple pieces after dinner for days to come, but they gotta brush their teeth afterwards.

i think you guys are all paranoid. i still go trick or treating i am 15and my mom just make sure everything thats openis thrown away and she lets us pig out on the candy but then the next few days we only get like 4 or 5 pieces
