Tell Mommy: Where Did Your Newborn Sleep?

My son and daughter slept in the same white wicker bassinet that I did as an infant. The linens have been replaced, but over time, its durable craftsmanship has lulled 28 of our family's infants to sleep. But when it comes to putting a newborn to bed, there are more than a few options out there. From moses baskets to handmade cradles and co-sleepers to carseat inserts, many options have surfaced over time. From dresser drawers to the parents' bed, where did your baby lay his or her head for the first few months of life?

We always co-sleep. It makes nursing at night easier, I could nurse lying down and then fall back to sleep. My babies always co-slept until they were sleeping through the night and then we made the transition to the crib.

My twin son and daughter shared a crib in their nursery until we moved them into separate cribs when they were about 3 months old. They've been sleeping soundly in them ever since!

I co-slept with my daughter. If I was absolutely too tired I would put her in the bassinet insert of her playpen.

My daughter is 6 weeks old and for the first 4 weeks of her life she slept on a sleep positioner between her father and I's pillows. Now she sleeps in a co-sleeper by my bed for most of the night (I say most cause I bring into bed with me to nurse and tend to fall asleep. Smiling )

In the basinet top of the pack in play. Those co-sleepers have had babies slip in them and get strangled so you should check out consumer reports on those.

In the Pack N Play in our room for a few weeks until I realized we would all sleep much better with him in his own room. We moved him at about 4-5 weeks into his own crib and he slept great. It was a good decision and the next baby might just start out from the beginning in his/her own crib.

We have a family bassinet that five of my son's cousins have all spent their first few months of life in. It is absolutely beautiful, is on casters so it can be wheeled from room to room and I just love that we have this tradition.

The stroller we bought had a bassinet attachment, so it was easy to walk him around the house to calm him, and even easier to just let him stay in the bassinet after we finally got him back to sleep.

In the bassinet from the Pack n Play for a bit. We used the car seat when they both had too much gas, and we had a great moses basket for day time naps in the family room. I am with Schnappycat about moving them to their own room. We also moved them both to their room- connected to ours- after about 4-5 weeks so I could get some rest. We all slept better.

I was planning on having my son sleep in the bassinet from his stroller, but my mom surprised me and made him a beautiful bassinet that he slept in next to my bed.

for the first couple of weeks i slept in the recliner in the nursery with the baby; so many feedings it was easier than getting up and going back to bed. after that they slept in their crib, but is a bouncy chair in the crib because i was so afraid they would roll over and suffocate (???). once they could hold their head up pretty good i stopped using the bouncy chair.

Our plan was to have our son sleep in the bassinet next to our bed, but he would only sleep in it at nap time, so we ended up co-sleeping for the first 3 months. Plus we all slept better being together at night. Then he went to the bassinet attached to the pack-n-play for about 3 weeks. And once he was finally sleeping mostly though the night he went into his crib in his own room. I think if we ever decide to have more kids we will do the same process because it worked so well for our family.

Our little girl sleeps in a simple crib by our bed. Since we are in a loft, her bed is two steps from our bed. I pull her into bed at night to nurse and often I just want her to stay with us.

We co-slept for the first 6'ish months. However, our daughter would sometimes sleep in her bassinet. The bassinet was her grandfathers and has been handed down through the generations.

i have a question for you moms who had your baby sleep with you in your bed... how do you deal with covers & pillows? i just think that i've been so freaked out by reading all that stuff about having NOTHING in the crib so i wonder why it doesn't matter in your bed. is it because you are right next to the baby all night and can hear the breathing?
i think it would be nice (not to mention more convenient) to have the baby in bed with us or close by in a bassinet- but i haven't been through it yet.

kmckay for me i felt safe having them in bed with me because i was right there, when i had them in the crib in a different room i would get anxiety wondering if everything was okay

I use very thin pillows and when they're under a year, dress us for bed rather than relying on covers. Also, they always slept on my arm, which meant anything around us had to wake me to get around that before getting to baby.

we used the simplicity bassinet (that was recently recalled) and he loved it... had we been successful nursing... i still dont think we would have co-slept, i would have been too paranoid. we moved him to his room at 3 months (he was sleeping thru the night pretty well by then)... if we were to have another, i would probably do it the same way (altho maybe get a different bassinet one that wasnt y'know RECALLED)...

As an infant, my daughter slept with my then husband and me. BUT when she was around 1 1/2, she decided she didn't want to sleep with us, and NOT in her crib.. she would climb out and we would find her in random places in the house. Our solution was a kiddie pool! We bought her the biggest plastic kiddie pool we could find, filled it with pillows and blankets and that's where she would sleep! It was less risky than her climbing out of her crib every night! She's almost 14 now, and we still joke about it!

My son started out in a bouncy chair because he wouldn't sleep in the basinette. Then he slept on my chest because he wouldn't sleep in the basinette when we put him on his back. We figured out he would only sleep on his belly and I couldn't hold him all night every night because then I wasn't getting any sleep either because I was too worried about dropping him. So we got the Angel Care monitor and put it under his matress and let him sleep on his belly and we all got some sleep after that. And a little after 3 mos we put him in his crib in his own room.

Dr Sears taught me everything I know about cosleeping as well. I'm another one who doesn't sleep well if we're not together.

Greggie- people look at me like I am crazy when I say I am co-sleeping but after I refer to them Dr. Sears' website they understand better. My hubby wasn't that sure in the beginning but he likes it now.
