I was one of the lucky people whose water broke while lying in my hospital bed — no harm done to my own sheets, mattress or couch. I always imagined I'd be one of those people who experienced the embarrassing moment of flooding an aisle at the grocery store or a restaurant floor.
I've had friends who have popped in the Whole Foods check out line, their desk at work and in their swimming pool! While pants may not be the most comfortable option at 40 weeks, I am thinking they're the safest bet to hiding amniotic fluid!
Tell me, where were you when your water broke?

In my hospital bed after 16 hours of labor
1in the hospital mine never broke on its own with either kid
2mine broke on the way to bathroom during a late night pee run.
3on the way to the bathroom one morning...i thought i had to go pee really bad..guess i didn't...lol.
4Mine broke when I started to push.
5I guess when the doctor cut into my lower abdomen.
6in the hospital. I had been having contractions for hours and finally went and was only dilated a cm! But, my water broke right after they examined me so they kept me.
7In the hospital during labor right after I was catherized for the epidural. I thought the cath was leaking!
8luckily, in the bathroom!
9On its own - once in the hospital, once at home. Once broken by the doctor in the hospital.
10The bag of waters breaks before reaching the hospital or birth center in only 13% of cases.
11at home...I too thought I was having a serious contraction that was making me pee! i managed to squeeze tight and hold it until the toilet!!
12mine was artificially broken during the induction process.
13Mine wasw broken by the doc at the hospital
14My doctor broke my water at the hospital after I'd labored at home for 12 hrs and 2 hrs in the hospital. I don't think I know anyone whose water actual broke outside of the hospital.
15On the labor table with my first, and barely any came out since I'd been induced due to a dead placenta and extremely low fluid levels. The other two were c-sections.
Pants aren't really necessary, just wear a liner late in pregnancy. Water rarely gushes out unless you're in a movie or on tv. In reality, it's usually a slow trickle and most women think they just peed their pants.
16I went to the hospital in labor and told them that I was losing bladder control a bit with each contraction because they were so strong. They asked if my water had broken and I said no, there had been no "gush". I had no clue it wasn't always one big break! Things you don't know with the first pregnancy...
17When my water broke at the hospital, it was definitely more than a trickle so I'm hoping this time around I'll be at the hospital again or wearing a pair of not so good pants!
18I didn't say it was always a trickle, just usually.
I actually think pants would make a large amount more noticeable, though.
19I woke up in the middle of the night with a stomach ache. As I got out of bed and walked to the bathroom, mine broke. Luckily I was in the comfort of my own home!
20Reading this makes me want to adopt even more. You women are amazing!
21Mine started leaking (trickling) when I was at work (around 4-5pm) I asked a friend because I wasn't sure. I thought maybe I could have just peed my pants a little. She told me that I should go home and call the doctor if it didn't dry and go away. When I called he told me to get in immediately. I had slight contractions and they just monitored me overnite and induced me the next day. I too was expecting a big gush. I watch too much tv.
22I was getting ready to go to work, on the day that my job had a baby shower planned for a couple of pregnant women in the office. I noticed that I was leaking. Since everyone told me it would be a big rush of fluid, I wasn't sure. I think I stood in the bathroom 20 minutes waiting for the flood! It was just small trickles. I finally went to the doctor. After being induced and waiting for 16 hours, they had to break it for me. Boy, was that a weird feeling!
23First child it was a POP and a trickle. Second child it was done at the hospital. I remember being pregnant for the first time and being so stressed that it could happen at any time and be a flood. From the comments above I now think I was being silly for worrying so much.
24i was in hospital, being induced and they had to 'break the waters'! little munchkin didn't want to come out!!!
25I had just sat down to get a pedicure when my water broke! Luckily, it was just a trickle but it still went through my pants and onto the seat. I called for my husband (he and my mom had gone with me) and whispered, "I think my water just broke." He got me up and into the car as quickly as possible. I was so embarassed but the staff was understanding and the entire salon broke out in congratulatory applause!
26I guess the best thing any woman can do is read these threads before getting pregnant, is one of the best ways to know what can and cannot happen. Especially with so many different experiences. Thank you all for sharing! I really appreciate it!!!
27The doctor broke my water. It was a riot! He came into the room, asked me how I was feeling. He opened up my chart, and half opens the "crochet hook", asks me to hold on to the packaging while he pulls out the hook. I ask him what he's up to, and before he can answer - there it was!
The funny part, he finished getting all the water out, put down some additional towels and said "I'll be right back" - he LEFT THE ROOM. And, forgot to come back for a while.
Meanwhile, a nurse walks in, asks if the doctor has been by. I reply and let her know that yes, he's been by - and he broke my water. As she was alerting me to his nickname given to him by the nursing team (The Lone Ranger), she had to change my entire bed, and I got a new gown.
The Lone Ranger is an excellent doctor, and I continue to recommend him to anyone in Los Angeles!
28mine was artificially broken in the hope i would dialate some more... it workt..
