Flying high with more than you can handle? As a mom, I think the best seats on the plane are in the back row. Even before I had children, I like being in the last row because you don't get the sense of being sandwiched between a bunch of other passengers. And, once I had tots, it seemed like the most obvious choice as trips to change diapers or use the restroom inconvenience the least amount of people. Additionally, many fliers don't care to sit in those chairs so there's often extra space. To see what happened on a recent trip, read more.
The other night, I was on a packed flight and looked over to see a mom with a baby on her lap and her tots filling the rest of the row. The three sons were all under the age of five, and one lil guy, who looked about two, was having a mini meltdown. No one on the plane seemed to mind, aside from the fellow sitting in front of him who turned out to be his father. The husband, who had his iPod on, occasionally turned around to tell the boy to be quiet, but it was the wonder woman wife who juggled bottles and cups, snacks and books, and tended to all the tots' needs during the flight. All in all, the children were very well behaved, and I imagine the mama was exhausted. The dad, on the other hand, enjoyed quite the relaxing flight.
Does your family have an air strategy — where to sit or which parent handles what, etc.?

I highly dislike the back seats. They're noisy, they're cramped, and it's a constant stream of traffic and food service people. We do about the middle, because the walking interests the kids and gives them a chance to get up and about.
I'd file for divorce if my husband didn't help out on a flight.
1uh, if that was my husband, i'd be locking the door behind me as soon as i got home
terrible
but good point about the back seats
2I know this sounds awful, but my husband travels constantly for work, so if we travel as a family (8 mth old baby), I insist on using his FF miles for an upgrade. I can't imagine trying to keep hold of a baby boy who wants to stand and play while someone is next to me in coach. Once we have to get him his own seat, though, these are some good things to think about - it would never have dawned on me that some areas of the plane would be better than others.
3I don't think small children belong in business class at all. Many people in business class are working or needing a quick rest before endless meetings. It is like an expensive restaurant. Yes you can bring a child if they are well behaved, but if a meltdown happens there isn't an outside to take them to in order to not disturb others.
4Unavoidably, we took our 5 month old in first class once. We were using miles for a ticket and all the coach seats were blocked out. In the end, she was perfect and didn't make a peep, but I was very nervous. I'm not sure why I felt like taking a baby/small child in first class is a no-no, but I did.
5i'd seriously be kicking my boy's ass if he EVER did that....
....but i've got him trained so
well.....
...i keep telling myself that...
6Oh boy...my husband would be in serious danger of sleeping on the couch at his friend's house if he ever acted like that. Good advice to store for later. Thanks
