Perhaps because he's a father and husband or just a moral man, Democratic candidate Barak Obama said that families are off-limits in this presidential race. CNN reported:
"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."
His statement was in response to the recent news that Gov. Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is five-months pregnant. Obama added that he is a product of teenage pregnancy as his own mother was 18 when she gave birth. When it comes to living very public and political lives, do you think it's fair to ask that candidate's families be taken out of the mix?

It's an honorable sentiment. I find it hard to believe it will work out that way.
1That's PR hard at work. A candidate should be judged on their credentials and not their family, but then again, so many candidates use their nuclear families as the ticket to success.
2i agree families should be off limits, but this will never happen especially with all this juicy gossip the media is going to run with it, as are celebrities rags look at diddy, obama can certainly use this to his advantage being the good guy to win more votes, every other commercial break brings up the fact that the vp daughter pregnant at 17 and unwed
3Im not sure if I agree, I mean, yea the familes should be off limits. . but what does that say about her as a parent/person? Im not meaning to sound judgemental, but?
4That she is human nv. That accidents happen.
5And, I am no Obama fan, but I admire this statement.
6Absolutely.
All this focus on the candidates' spawn only distracts from the real issues about which we should be voting. It's sensationalism and TV politics at its worst, and it's cruel to the children involved, as well.
7Politician's families should absolutely be off limits. I think it's a low blow to bring them into the picture. Stick to the issues please.
8what does it say as a parent/person.
9Trust me no matter how strict this mother is or what she believes in I am sure her daughter was gonna have sex regardless, you can't watch over you kids 24/7
what kinda annoys me,maybe it is because I was a teen mom,but what is the difference of having sex at 17. you are still doing something wrong you just have not been caught like others have.
10I'm glad Obama has said this but regardless of how they feel about him, the media will not listen. They're ruthless.
I have to agree with letsgetloud. No matter how strict Palin is a parent or how much she has talked to her about sex and what she believes, teenagers still do as they wish unfortunately.
11I agree, children aren't running the White House. Well they might be, but they shouldn't.
12I am astonished that this is front page worthy of the new york times. The sex life of a 17 year old girl. Wow. They report the news very conveniently to their purposes.
13They absolutely shouldn't be apart of the politics and whatever happens in the candidates personal life isn't our business.
14Milo, I wouldn't go that far. I would say whatever happens in the candidates children's personal life isn't our business, but the candidate is sure is. Personal life is anything not involving doing a job, right? Well, that would include all kinds of other things. It could be something illegal or just sordid, maybe illegal and sordid (likes to put babies on spikes).
15While a politician's family should be able to stay out of the spotlight that just isn't the reality and Palin knew going in to this that she would be exposing her daughter to scrutiny she otherwise would not have known.
16That being said I think people should back off of Bristol now that the truth is out there and just let her do her thing.
I really respect Obama for making that statement, and I totally agree with him.
17This was a very classy move by Obama. Honorable, even.
18Now, if only (1) the press would follow Obama's lead and (2) the Republicans could have ONE IOTA as much class as Obama.
Let us not forget that there isn't one aspect of Obama's personal and family life that isn't ripped apart and to shreds by Fox News. From the screen cap of Michelle Obama labeling her "obama's baby mam" to the vitriol shown by the conservative talk show hosts about Michelle's income....I mean seriously.
Keep your eye on the ball people. Bristol's "situation" is hardly a reason to vote for or against her mom.
19Obama is right to omit families but to bad alot of others don't agree. It's sad that an attack was on Obama for his family! How aweful that it's OK to attack black families but it should be off limits for white families. The media must start to be fair in the reporting of news. Teen pregnancy is teen pregnancy regardless of the race. Babies having babies is never a good thing.
20ok can I just get controversal and ask do you think if it were one of his daughters that McCain or any political figure would extend his daughter the same honor and decency to her privacy?
21Well, GS I have to say that illegal sure then it is our business, but sordid, no not really. If a candidate cheats on their spouse, I honestly don't think we need to know. I don't think it has anything to do with running the country.
