Did You Always Know You Wanted to Be a Parent?

Latin singer Ricky Martin's reps confirmed he became the father to twin boys who were born via gestational surrogacy last week. It was a surprise to most of us, but according to People, Ricky always knew he wanted to be a parent.

In fact, he told People many years ago:

I would love to have children of my own because I know I can offer them a good life...I genuinely like kids.

I find his quote incredibly endearing and it reminded me that I have always looked forward to being a parent. Did you always know you wanted to have children?

OMG... I have a picture with him when he was that age Smiling LOL
I'm 31 and now is when the parenting bug is actually biting me. I never thought I wanted kids for many, many reasons. But now I have such a wonderful home with my husband, I'd love to share it with a child of our own, and possibly even an adopted child too.

Yes ever since I was a little girl..... I love kids and I've always known in my heart that I would be a parent someday. It's my greatest joy in life.

I always thought my life would follow the common path -- marriage, home, kids... I have the marriage and the home. I would still like kids, but the reality of how much of a financial strain that would be for us has made me think twice, at least for now. Plus I have some health problems that could be seriously exacerbated by pregnancy, so that could be a huge expense as well, something we don't have the savings to cover.

imcs - that is me to a tee. I never really wanted kids - i had a mom that wasn't so great at being a mom and had a fear that I would be like that. But after I was with my man for years and then we married and settled into our life, I knew I wanted a family to share with him. Now - I can't imagine not being a mom. My son is the absolute love of my life (don't tell his dad lol). It is the best thing ever. I thank God every day that we were able to concieve because I know how hard it is for some people.

I never really thought about it until I was about 20 and then I decided that I didn't want children. Somehow, around 24 I changed my mind and realized that kids and a family really were something I wanted. And I'm really glad I did because my kids have brought so much to my life.

I'm totally like skigurl. I won't feel like my life is complete if I dont have kids. A mom is the only thing Ive ever really dreamt of being, I think being a SAHM would be the ultimate!

I had always wanted to have two kids then once I was married around 24 I was afraid to be a mom. When I got pregnant I was terrified. Had my first and was in love. Unfortunately his dad wasn't a good parent at the time and it discouraged me from wanting to have any more. I thought I would always just have the one until I married the man of my dreams. Now we have another little guy and I actually think I might want to do it again before I am officially too old- still a bit on the fence though as this little guy was a lot more work than the first.

I've always known I DIDN'T want kids. I remember being very worried about it when I was little. I asked my mom in a panic how I'd be able to make sure I never had babies, and she told me there's a pill you take if you don't children. I immediately begged her for that pill.... I was about 9.

I don't want children of my own, and I never have. As selfish as it sounds, I want to be able to work at my career without any hinderances. I think it would be irresponsible of me to have kids when I clearly don't have the time I think should be devoted to raising children. However, my boyfriend has a nine-year-old daughter whom I love. I have been a part of her life for years, and I love when she is at our house. I could very easily fall in love with being a stepmom!

I always played the mommy as a child. Now I wish I had, had my daughter sooner. I can't remember my life before her.. it's a lot more fun then i even expected it to be when i played at a child.

I'm probably in the minority here... but I've never wanted children. Never. Even as a little girl, I hated playing "house." It's just... not something I want for myself. Not to say that I don't adore my nieces

Lol, I hated playing House too.. or if I played like that stupid family house crap I always got stuck being the Dad or the Husband, wtf.

And I hated playing with dolls. I'm pretty non maternal, but I'm doing this [one time] mommy-thing very well.

did not want kids, didn't see then need. then one day i was at the mall and this little boy and girl got so excited over christmas saying "mommy! mommy! santa's here!" i started crying and had this "i have to get married and have kids" moment. suddenly i wanted to see my dad be a grandpa, and have mommy moments and this whole flood of things i'd never felt before. i still remember standing in that mall feeling like i had forgotten to do the most important thing in the world; have a family. weird. never talked to anyone else that had this happen to them.

I've always wanted to be a parent, at least for as long as I can remember...I'm not a mother right now, but I'm only 19 years old. Hopefully it will happen to me one day though!

I waffle back and forth about being a parent. I had some of the same experience as tina_marie and would never be able to live with myself if I was as bad a mother as my mother was. If I were to do it, I would rather adopt. Why bring more children into the world when there are plenty that need loving families to care for them already?
