I think it's great that the teachers are going to be allowed to defend themselves and their kids. My concern is that the kids will get ahold of the weapons and cause deadly havoc of their own.

when I heard about this I totally assumed it was in an urban area with a lot of crime and discipline problems at the school - and I was ok with it. my comfort level is seriously decreased now that I know more about the circumstances (200 person town, relatively absent of crime). why?

omg, thats ridiculous. I wouldnt want anybody with a gun spending all day with my kid. thats an accident waiting to happen.

What a horrible idea. I would not tolerate guns in my child's school. Because they're close to a highway?!?!?! My guess is the odds are a lot higher of injury from guns in school than someone coming off the "highway" to wreak havoc. Weird.

As a former teacher, I think this is a great idea. Without question the teachers need to be trained etc in regards to guns, and they need to always be vigilant and use their heads. That being said, there were several times in my teaching career when I wish I was able to carry, and I won't get into that here.
More guns = less crime. It's as simple as that. There has been several statistical studies that prove it. I think it is highly ignorant to declare a place a gun free zone. A gun free zone sign isn't going to stop a crazy person. A sane person with a gun is only thing that will stop a crazy person with a gun.

I'd have to check into their policy on how they choose who carries and what kind of training they give, but overall I'd be ok with it.

This is dangerous for the students and the teachers themselves. Suppose that a student can access the guns or a teacher harms his/ herself?

goldie10x, more guns does not mean less crime. It only promotes mroe violence and makes it more dangerous.

I think it's a very bad idea, as any of those kids could get a hold of the teacher's gun. However, when you go the grocery store, you have no idea of who is there with a concealed weapon.

Well it is ultimately up to the parent. If you don't like the fact that teachers now have a right to self-defense, pull your kid out and homeschool them. I think a lot of people have forgotten that they have a choice to do that. People need to think for themselves and make the best choices for them, but that's another thing entirely.

I also agree with goldie, why should people have to risk their lives, I remember when I was in middle school, at my elementary school there were three people who died the shooter the wife who he abused and (she finally had the courage to leave) and an outstanding police officer, the reason it happened at the school the girl ran across the street were the school was at, maybe the deaths could have been prevented maybe not

I've never liked guns and see problems with this. How can it be certain children won't know where the guns are and get a hold of them by accident or intentionally to do harm? I certainly understand teachers' fears especially in the last decade or so with school shootings, but this makes me uneasy.

i am shocked and appalled that this is even a question, let alone that ANYONE answered kid friendly to this. honest to god you should be ashamed of yourselves.

goldie10x- Why should I have to homeschool my kid if I want him in a gun-free environment. Shouldn't it be the opposite- if someone is so fearful of gunmen entering their kid's school they should keep their kid home to homeschool?

Homeschooling actually isn't an option for everyone. For instance, I realize that homeschooling would be a huge disservice to my children at this point in our lives because I simply cannot teach. Things I understand, I can't explain. My children would be held back if I kept them at home.

Beyond that, I agree with goldie as well.
