Pharmaceutical Company Called About Son's Missed Shot

I'm starting to think that the pharmaceutical company is keeping better tabs on my 20-month-old than I am. Earlier in the week, it struck me as odd when my son received a stock-printed card from a pharmaceutical company reminding him that he had missed a vaccination. As he can't read and I handle our family's medical matters, I relayed the message and meant to call our pediatrician's office to inquire about the notice, but haven't had a chance. So my jaw dropped today when I came home to hear a message on our answering machine from the pharmaceutical company reminding me once again that my lil guy was due for shot.

In addition to advising that I make an appointment, it said that none of my tot's medical information had been sold as the voicemail was simply a courtesy call. I am now debating whether I should call my doctor or just wait a few more days until the doorbell rings and a medic with a syringe arrives looking for my child.

That is tooo crazy! If your information has not been sold, then how are they getting it? I would definitely call your doc's office. It would worry me that some company is keeping tabs that closely.

Are you kidding me? That's too far. Like Evalicious said "I would definitely call your doc's office. It would worry me that some company is keeping tabs that closely."
There has to be information sold/traded/given somewhere along the lines.

Definitely call the doc ASAP and find out what is going on. Due to illness this past winter my daughter was 3 months late on a series of shots and nothing like this happened. She just received them at a 21 month visit instead of her 18 month visit. No postcards or phone calls - something is definitely not right with your situation.

I got the same phone call last night! Interesting since we go to the same pediatrician's office. I'm calling today.

Like I said before, Big Pharma will try and keep its customers.

On a side note, I would be suspicious of your docs office. Like Mommy of Three said, she wasn't contacted about any missed shots. For them to know the specific shot you missed, there is some information-sharing going on there.

I don't trust Big Pharma in ANY way.

So I called the doctor's office and they are not thrilled that the patients are getting unsolicited phone calls. It turns out that our insurance companies are the ones making the calls. And, it seems they expect all children to receive a TB screening before one year. Our doctor's office only does these if you are at high risk (thankfully).

I was assured that my daughter is up to date on her vaccines and to ignore the phone call. But, I do have to say I am better safe than sorry. A simple phone call to the doc assured me that all is well.

Since it's two of you from the same office that got the same call, confront your doctor. I personally could never stay with a doctor who cared so little about patient privacy, nor could I trust his/her input. Sounds more like they're in it for the payoff from whatever rep pays the highest rather than having the patient's best interests at hand.

I would double check with your pediatrician but I seriously doubt that he/she or any one in the office "sold" your information. Honestley, they are simply too busy. I would be far more suspect of your insurance company - they are far less restricted by HIPPA and often provide information to outside agencies (such as pharmaceutical companies). I would call the pharma company and register your displeasure. I would also call your insurance company and raise hell! To sell or release your info, they should have a consent form - get them to send you a copy (it doesn't exist, so I would be interested in their answer).

I think that most people have no idea how often insurance companies exchange your information - it really is a commodity that is sold to any bidder. HIPPA ties a physicians hands but leaves lots of holes for insurance and other companies.

I had a horrible experience last year when after an episode of wheezing, I started to get calls about enrolling my son in "asthma" trials. Since "asthma" is a pre-existing condition that can affect his insurability, I was furious. Asthma was not written anywhere in his medical record but based on his episode of wheezing and his prescription for Albuterol, the insurance company blue cross) had "assumed" he had asthma and given his name to pharma companies! A few agry phone calls stopped the offers but I am sure that he is still on some asthma list somewhere.

I would have been angry about the postcard. This would have sent me through the roof.

I wonder what else they know about you!

I'm curious as to why you haven't scheduled the appt for the vaccine if that's what you intend to do. If you don't intend to vaccinate further, then call the doc and ask to be taken off the reminder list. Also ask why the pharma co. has your information. If the dr's office is resistant to your questioning, maybe it's time to switch pediatricians. Instead of just complaining about it and letting the issue continue, you should do something to solve the issue.
