Occasionally we hear about women who say they didn't know they were pregnant until they went into labor. The tiny jolts I am currently feeling in my tummy make stories like that hard to believe, but the mommies in the video below are convincing that their unknowing pregnancy was the real deal.

Dr. Kristen Bendikson of USC told Good Morning America's Robin Roberts that these situations can occur when ladies suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome or enter their perimenopausal transition stage. In both cases, menstrual cycles aren't regular so missing a period may not denote pregnancy. Also a key factor for many women is their weight. The heavier a person is before pregnancy, the less noticeable a weight gain would be in a nine month period. Tell me, do you think you could have missed the pregnancy signals?

I am overweight and I was overweight when I got pregnant with my son years ago...There is NO WAY I could not haave known! The kicks, the back pain, the constant tired feeling...its UNMISTAKABLE!!! Unless the woman has never been pregnant and is very obese I just don't buy it!!
1I didn't believe in this until last night when I was watching something on the same topic on Discovery Health. A woman had actually lost weight during her pregnancy because she was preparing for her wedding. She ended up having the baby a couple of weeks before her wedding and the baby was and now is perfectly healthy.
There is no way I wouldn't have known because I was really nauseous the first three months and the last three months.
2i used to work with a girl who weighed 115 pounds and she was big pregnant big and we as in several people asked her how many months are you and she said im not pregnant i have an ulcer, i was like damn, well wouldnt you know a month later she had a healthy baby girl weighing in at 9 pounds, and mind you this girl drank not knowing she was pregnant, which i didnt understand how she couldnt know, ive been pregnant three times had my period till the 6th month with each one and still knew, she was either in denial or really didnt know
3This is beyond me. To have this happen, you would have to have no connection to your body at all. I knew the second I craved potato chips and MISSED A PERIOD! And the kicks!?! Seriously? Many times, especially towards the end, I thought she was going to kick straight out of my stomach. Not to mention when she would ball up under my ribs on the right side. I don't think there is anyway I would not know there was a baby in there...
With that said, I do know someone that this happened to. She went to the emergency room with bad stomach cramps and went home with a baby boy.
4pinkprincess - the girl I was referring to in my post drank HEAVILY also. Her brother said, "I think he's [the baby] had more vodka than I have." She also did drugs. I hope for the sake of that sweet baby boy that he is OK.
5I personally find it difficult to understand, but what do I know - I've never been pregnant.
6luckyme that boggles my mind because, here i was taking every precaution possible cut all sweets cold turkey and I'm addicted to soda i ate vegetables which i hate but for the sake of my children i did everything right and my son was born with mild cerebral palsy, btw that girl i worked with was smoking a lot of pot too, maybe i should have don't that, no way i couldn't live with myself, but at the end my son was my biggest blessing
7I would think you don't have a very high level of self awareness if you can't tell your body is pregnant for 9 months.
8i agree that you must be really out of touch with your body to not know you are pregnant. I got pregnant right in the middle of training for an ironman. I was in amazing shape but very thin (about 100 pounds) and had stopped getting my period..so I was surprised when I found out i was pregnant! But it only took me a couple of weeks to notice something wasn't right. I thought I was overtraining and cut my workouts in half, when that didn't work I sent my husband to the drugstore for the test.
I just don't understand it...
9Pinkprincess - I am sorry to hear about your son. Although it sounds like you have a very good outlook on it. He's lucky you are his mama
It does make you wonder though, doesn't it? I did everything right too; no Sushi, extra fruits, veggies and proteins, and if you were to look at my daughter and her son next to one another, you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. It's hard to say what the future will bring...her son could be exceptionally smart/gifted, or the vodka, etc. may have impacted or halted some neurological development. It's hard to say.
10you have to keep going and strong you cant dwell on something that will never change, but like i said he is the best gift and would never change him or switch him for a "normal child", anyway back on topic people tend to get angry when posters express their experiences
11Um, I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and I knew when I was pregnant. I don't get how that makes any difference...sure, I had irregular and missed cycles, but when you are in late stages of pregnancy, how can you not notice a growing belly? Especially when you are so uncomfortable towards the end. I don't get it.
12I just find it so hard to believe that you wouldn't know. I'm 24 weeks and I have been feeling all kinds of movement that I couldn't imagine not knowing what it was since 16 weeks. Your body changes in so many ways that you really would have to be not in tune to your body to not notice!
13My baby wasn't much of a kicker and I didn't get very big but I still knew I was pregnant. I don't understand it either. I was fatigued beyond belief and went through so many changes that you just know something's up.
14I've heard of this before. It happens on occasion, and I trust that it's real and these women are telling the truth. But like the story says, weight is a huge factor. This can only happen to fat people.
That girl pinkprincess mentioned that said she had an ulcer -- she was either lying, or actually that stupid, in which case she really shouldn't reproduce..
15It seems totally unbelievable to me, but I have a really hard time being pregnant (the symptoms, I mean, not the fact that I'm pregnant, which is lucky and lovely). I'm sick the full 40 weeks, I have symphysis pubis disorder, I feel tired and weak, the bump hurts, the baby kicks. When you're in the 30s weeks, the baby doesn't just kick, it shifts around, turns over, and you can see the giant shoulder movement of it turning, it looks like Alien.
16How funny- I actually asked my doctor about this at my last prenatal appointment a few weeks ago. He mentioned how some women still have their period and how obese women don't gain very much weight, but admitted he didn't understand how women could not know. He pointed out when you see an elbow roll across your stomach and think it's just gas- that's some pretty massive bowel issues.
17very cool video. I could not have missed the signs because I was hard and round and sometimes you could see his little feet!
18If I was so enormous I couldn't even notice a baby in my stomach, I think I'd be pretty embarrassed and not advertising that fact to the world...
19hitthatsmybike we all thought the same about her reproducing glad the baby came out healthy but how do you not know, my future sister in law weighs 400+ and even she knew when she was pregnant it was weird because she swore her baby was moving I couldn't see it but hey I guess and her baby weighed 7 pounds
20I could never understand how someone could say they didn't know they were pregnant. I guess some people really don't, but I take stories like that with a grain of rock salt. I couldn't have missed any of the signs!
21I know someone who didn't know until she was 7 months pregnant. She is a bit round, but not really heavy. She actually had surgery for fertility reasons WHILE SHE WAS PREGNANT and they didn't know (it was at the very beginning of her pregnancy)! I think the doctor wrote in her chart "noticed enlarged uterus."
22I just don't understand how you cannot tell. I am due in 3 weeks and MAN does this baby move. I can lay down and we are talking 8.9 on the earthquack scale when he moves.
23I do not buy their "I did not know" stories one bit; I think they made it up for publicity.
I have never been pregnant however no matter how chubby your mid-section is, all you would have to do is touch your belly and realize that is doesn't just press in as usual, that it is like a ballon. Plus, you would feel the baby. If these women did miss their periods normally because of a condition, wouldn't they notice something was wrong when it didn't show for 5-9 months (depending on your system.) These women must be very out of touch with reality.
Sorry if I sound mean in anyway, I just do not believe that you can have no awareness that you are pregnant. Maybe if their weight was like 400lbs+ however I bet even those women would notice.
24I never been pregnant either, but I find those women hard to believe. They must be completely out of touch with their bodies.
I'm very connected to my body. I can tell when I've ovulated. Also, I can tell the week my monthly girlfriend will be arriving.
25This is really interesting.
26OH BULLS...! one smart question did these women ever have a period ,did they ever miss a period, did they not know what was happening every month.....I mean are they periodless, continue with a period for nine months ? DID I miss something growing up
27i agree with you who don't believe these women- either they were completely moronic (no clue about their bodies) or in severe denial... don't you think family & friends (not to mention strangers) would've pointed out the fact that they were pregnant? your abdomen HAS to get bigger (the woman planning her wedding... don 't you think she would've noticed? brides usually stay on top of their sizing & weight)and your chest grows to!
28whatever... thank goodness their babies didn't have major issues
wow some harsh comments.
29One of my close friends said she didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth at 7 months. And she is quite petite(around 5'2" and 110 pounds). The baby was only 2 lbs and barely over a foot long when it came out. Now he's nearly average size at 18 months and grew up to be very adorable. But I worry about him having neurological problems down the road.

32Sorry for the repeated posts. I think my computer isn't working right or I accidently pressed the wrong button.
33I remember learning about this in psych class and being amazed that this happens. Years later, it actually did happen to my friend's sister. She didn't know she was pregnant, stayed tiny throughout the whole pregnancy, and wasn't perturbed by the fact that she had a baby out-of-the-blue. It was established that she was likely raped and her mind couldn't deal with the trauma and both her mind and her body suppressed the incident and the related pregnancy.
34I heard about this with young girls who have a been abused and they pretend it never happened and nine months later a baby comes out. I do believe they might not have noticed, it happens. Just cause some of you have never known anyone in that situation doesn't mean it can't happen.
35Ok this reminds me of a "dear abby" from last week and here it is if anyone wants to look at it: http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/?uc_full_date=20080719
It basically is about a 20 year old male whose girlfriend starts gaining weight, and his family asks her continuously if she's pregnant, as do her co-workers, and even tho all of those people continue to ask her she still never took a test.
I still find this hard to believe though. I too heard about this in a psych class but they say it is largely related to denial.
I was pregnant until 2 months when I "lost" the baby, and during thsoe eight weeks i was so sick and i didn't feel like myself, even my boyfriend noticed a change, everything from my boobs to my personality. Everyone of my friends who have been pregnant were basically the same.
36I watched the video and niether woman seemed obese to me.
I've had two friends get preggo while on the pill and both knew something was up within the first 5 or 6 weeks. So to me being on the pill is never an excuse anymore, since i've seen people go through that....
37unless I had a pea sized baby, I would know even the slightest change in my body...my period's too damn regular...and even if I had a period the whole 9 months, I think something in my system would trigger an OBGYN appt....that's just me
38Yeah this is really hard to believe. Though I do know a woman who didn't know she was pregnant until like six months. I have an irrational fear that this will happen to me.
39Call me crazy but I think I'd like to be oblivious through 9 months of pregnancy!!!
joking aside, I would be blown away to find myself that out of touch with my body, and want to do what I can food and exercise wise for a healthy baby so I'd be bummed to find out I'd been having a glass of wine every night while pregnant!!
but otherwise, I'd love to suddenly have a kid and not have to go through pregnancy!
40This sort of happened to me, i didnt know i was pregnant until i was about 5 months along. At that point i hadnt had my period in about a year because i had been very ill due to complications from crohns disease. I had gained about 20 pounds but because i had my gallbladder taken out about a month before i conceived i thought i had gained weight because of that, in the previous year i had gone from 140 to 98 pounds so i thought it was a good thing i gained lol. Ive always had crazy cravings for things and always get twinges in my tummy that feel like kicks. Due to the complications my mom had been told that i wouldnt beable to conceive, but she didnt tell me that. Its kind of funny tho, i was thinking about babies and what i would want to name mine if i had one. I was talking to one of my friends about it and she asked if i was, and i said i didnt think so but lets go get a test to be sure, and that damned pink line showed up as soon as the pee hit the stick! So just to let you all know it really does happen, and not everyone get super sick. After the year i had i was feeling great! I had the easiest pregnancy and labor ever!
41i agree that alot of people are probably oblivious to their bodies, but if they've never been pregnant, and are really obese and used to being uncomfortable, then i could see it happening.
42"one smart question did these women ever have a period ,did they ever miss a period, did they not know what was happening every month.....I mean are they periodless, continue with a period for nine months ? DID I miss something growing up"
Well, you seemed to have *missed* the part about the women typically suffering from PCOS.
Women with that condition have an irregular menstrual cycle. They very commonly miss periods. In fact, many of them may experience only a couple of bleeding cycles per year.
Other women can continue to bleed monthly for a vast stretch of weeks after conception, sometimes throughout the entire pregnancy.
So, yeah. There seems to be a lot that you missed.
43Pinkprincess- My best friend has mild cerebral palsy, and he's the kindest, most passionate person I've ever met. He's bloody brilliant, to boot :] I wish you and your family aaaall the luck and support in the world.
And, on topic, I've never really understood this phenomenon either, but if women can convince their body that they're pregnant and swell up and lactate and then only give birth to a placenta and other fluids, then I suppose they could never know that they're preg. I've never been pregnant, I suppose I could know. Btw, the thing I mentioned first is called phantom pregnancy syndrome or something to that effect.
44couldn't*
45i don`t understand how women could not know, i have a 15months old baby, o boy !
46I saw something like this on the Discovery Health Channel, and they pointed out that not everyone gets sick or has cravings, and some women don't even feel the baby move. Also, if you are very tall, it might not even look like you're pregnant. My mom is very tall, and when she was pregnant with my sister, people just thought she gained a few pounds.
47I already have 2 children and I am pretty sure I am pregnant right now. The thing is, I have been to the doctor 3 times in the past 4 months to ask the doctors am I pregnant, and the answer is no. I had taken a few HPT about 3 months ago and they were all negative. I continue to have my periods. I had an ultrasound 3 months ago and they didn't see a baby. I continue to have all my crazy symptoms that I contribute to stress. Now fast forward... I am a little overweight so I had started losing weight, but all of a sudden my stomach is HUGE! Still I haven't missed a period. I don't want to be pregnant because I have gone back to school and am very excited to be in this stage of my life. I know my body. I said I was pregnant, but the doctor said I'm not. So now what? I will be going to a different doctor in the next few weeks. Dollars to doughnuts they tell me I am 4 or more months pregnant. But that leaves me with the thought that a woman could be pregnant and not know because the test and even the doctor said shes not.
48According to when my last period was I should be in or on my way anytime now to the hospital to give birth. I have all the signs minus the fact they cannot find a heartbeat, and all pregnancy tests come up negative. Don't know what to do. They told me I had a miscarriage back in March but have been feeling kicking and tons of movement for the past 2 months now.
49I know this can be very difficult for people to believe. I never understood how this could happen until it happened to me! I found out I was pregnant at just over 4 months. I hadnt had a period in over 4 years, for reasons dr could not explain. So this was nothing unusual for me.At the time I got pregnant I was traveling in Australia with my boyfriend. The whole 4 months I was there actually. I was very active surfing, kayaking, hiking, I even fruit picked as a job. I had no morning sickness, I had no increase in weight, I am only 120lbs. I had no food cravings. In fact I felt better than I had in years, I had more energy, less headaches. Really I had nothing to alert me to being pregnant. I did get concerned though when I started to get very bad cramps ( due to ligament stretching) I went to the ER where they gave me blood tests and told me I was pregnant. BIG SURPRISE!!!
50I do know these cases are rare, and I even feel a bit awkward when I tell people I just didnt know. I dont thinkI could of gone longer not knowing though, the baby moves alot, and my belly is really growing. Needless to say I am happy that I am at home now so I can take care of my self and not still in a camper van with no idea:-)
