Family Ties: One Reason Why I Am the Luckiest Mom Alive

For some insane reason, my husband and I decided to drag our daughter with us to a wedding. Still under two, she sat as a lap–child for the long journey from San Francisco to small-town New Hampshire.

I brought DVDs, food, diapers, books, and small toys to entertain her. After we packed the car for the airport, I snatched my sleepy head from her crib and put her in the carseat. Awake two hours earlier than usual, she was surprisingly chipper and excited to go to the airport. An angelic babe, she did not fuss once between San Francisco and Hartford, CT, even with a stop in Chicago along the way. Sure she would lose it in the car, she took in the scenery and sang songs on our 90–minute journey to New Hampshire.

To see what happened on the return trip, read more.

Feeling blessed for the easy trip out East, I was certain the return trip would be a killer, especially with one extra stop. Once again, my girl proved to be a trooper. Another car ride and a nine–hour flight that involved stops in Chicago and Los Angeles and finally home, my rock-star baby amazed me with without even a shriek during the travels.

Even as a pregnant, nondrinking wedding guest, I enjoyed it more than most nuptials I have attended. My husband and I (bump included) danced the night away with friends and family to exceptional tunes. Best of all, we loved having our sweet pea along for the ride.

Is that an actual photo of you and your sweetpea? Or is it a stock photo?
Regardless, the little one in the photo is so adorable!!

Oh and that is a really sweet story Smiling

My children generally surprise me on longer trips as well. My first long plain ride with my younger son, I obesssed for weeks that he'd freak out when we got on the plane. He couldn't have behaved better.

My daughter gave us a wonderful car trip when she was about 2 months old. I was very pleasantly surprised.

We are taking our then 7 month old on his first plane trip in a few weeks and I couldn't be more stressed. He doesn't do well on laps for very long and tends to fuss before naps (if he will even nap in a strange place). I fear for other paying passengers and just hope we can keep him happy enough so we aren't the dreaded hated parents on the plane.

I hate you! Sticking out tongue My little one has a weak stomach and can't handle the descent. We just get the barf bag ready lol. On the last trip, she kept waking everyone up by pointing to them and asking if they were "sleeping?" very loudly. She was a dream to travel with as an infant but now she's in terrible 2 phase. Lord help me next week when we have to fly again.

Cute!! Mine always surprise me too. We just took an 8 hour car trip and all three of them were a dream. I can understand the STRESS leading up to a trip like that though! And airplanes are worse because you're dealing with other people. I suggest buying an extra seat and bringing their carseat.

I really wish buying an extra seat and using the carseat was economically possible for us, I agree that it's the best option. But my choice is either that she sits on my lap and meets my family, or we don't go.

What a precious and beautiful baby girl she is! She looks, and sounds, very well adjusted - someone's doing a great job.

We just got back from Italy, and my daughters were both really goo on the flights there and back. I was surprised - but I also think it's because of all the toys and stuff, and especially because of the carseat! Stella loves her (Britax Roundabout) carseat, I think it's very comfy. To think they didn't want to let us bring it on board!

We're taking my son to spring training in AZ next year and he'll then be 18mo and I'm a little nervous. That'll be his first plane ride. But I'm hoping with all the great suggestions I've gotten on here it'll work out ok. I'm thinking if we plan the trip for around a meal time it should be perfect. There's nothing that distracts him better than eating.
