Teething can be a nightmare for parents and toddlers alike. Many moms rely on products like Ambesol or Baby Orajel to get them through those droolish teary moments. Before stocking up on those "soothers," think again.
I recently received an email detailing a scary incident involving a mother who used Baby Orajel to soothe her tot's tooth pain. What she experienced was terrifying and all too common. After placing a dab of the numbing gel on her son's gums, her son stopped breathing, turned blue, and became limp.

Frantically, the mother and father began trying to revive the youngster. On his own, he finally snapped out of it and started crying hysterically. After spending the night in the hospital undergoing tests, the parents spoke with their pediatrician who advises her patients not to use the products as it can get into an infant's throat, causing them to stop breathing.
Similarly, the child's daycare workers and other moms have reported the same type incidents. Have you ever heard of this happening to children?

I've never heard of this happening and used Orajel on both my kids. Weird.
1Goodness! I'm dealing with a teether right now (his first just broke through), so this is good to know.
2I've used it with my son and never had a problem. How much of the solution did she dab in his mouth?
3I just got this same email! It is so scary!
4I never used orajel with my children because of it's numbing effects. I don't like to use medictions that numb my throat (ie: chloraseptic spray) on myself because I feel like I'm suffocating so I wouldn't ever use orajel or anything like it on my children for fear of them choking on their saliva because they couldn't swallow due to the numbing effects of the medication. For me, the risk outweighed the little bit of relief the medicine would give my child.
On a side note when you received the email I do hope you checked it on snopes first. sometimes those emails are just sent around as scare tactics and urban legends.
5I don't use numbing products. I used to just push on their little gums and it seemed to help a bit.
6I knew about this. My sister told me and I've never used any numbing products. I use Highlands homeopathic teething tablets.
7Wow that's scary! I don't like to use the throat sprays either Kimpossible. I feel like I am choking. It's pretty scary and I can see how orajel could do the same to a baby. And they don't have the mental or physical capacity to deal with it. I babysit a little boy who is teething and I'm going to talk to his mom about it.
LilRuck, I like your new picture! The kids are adorable!
8This is scary! Camilia works well for teething too.
9Use Hyland's teething tablets or Humphrey's teething pellets. They're homeopathic and include chamomolia. Also, the belladonna in them is the herb, not the drug. You can give a child an entire bottle and it's safe. (Not that I'd recommend an entire bottle, just saying that's how safe they are.)
I'd never give a numbing gel. Not only for the above reasons, but because it can severely impact their ability to latch onto a bottle or breast.
10I've given Hylands and Orajel, but I got this email yesterday and I am throwing out all the Orajel we have. I'm also telling family that babysits for our son about this in case they think he needs some and they go out and buy it for him.
11I'm always leery of emails that get passed around without any sourcing. (Presumably if there were any sources to information in the email you would have linked them.)
That said, I never bothered with Orajel. Hyland's Teething Tablets are the way to go. They are completely homeopathic, they work amazingly well and they don't seem to bother kids at all.
12My mom sent me one from the US (I am in the Philippines) and was thinking of using it on my baby. I guess not anymore. I don't want to take any chances. Thanks for the article.
13My cousin is actually friends with the lady who wrote the email. I checked the source before I wrote the post to make sure it wasn't an urban legend. Scary story... but true!
14Ok I'll be throwing that stuff out as soon as I get home. Scary.
15do not use baby orajel.
16I just got of the emergency line at orajel.com
my six month old baby cried non-stop after I placed the gel in her mouth, I then noticed her crying was raspy as if she had a sore throat. OUr baby is usually a calm and happy baby, I know teething can make them fussy, restless and irritable, but the level of these three was just unusually high after the teething gel. I gave it to her three times throught the day, i used my finger to dab it on her gums. I noticed the crying the first time but I just thought she hated the taste, she was crancy and fussy the rest of the day but I never connected the baby orajel until I noticed her raspy throat and unusual restlessness. It is well past midnight and she just fell asleep, poor thing. Bottom line, deal with the cries, use natural remedies DO NOT USE BABY ORAJEL. THe risk of a bronchial asthma like attack is rare but not worth the risk
What year did baby orajel go out on the market?
17OMG! thats scary I've never heard of that happening. I actually use baby oragel. I guess I won't buy my second box again. I'll just stick with the teeth rings.
