Before you and your tot hop a plane to a sunny destination, make sure you throw some sun protective clothing in your suitcase. While the garments shield your child's tender flesh from 99 percent of all harmful UV rays, they also keep them cool when they are out of the water and walking around in the heat. Last week, my husband and I took our kids on vacation and their Sunbusters clothing came in handy. Being from San Francisco, we are used to a mild climate so when temperatures hit 111 degrees, my daughter was more than happy to trade her swimsuit for a pink and lime long sleeve all in one ($46). My son opted for a pair of board shorts and a long sleeve rash shirt ($38). The garments are made of a quick drying fabric that is resistant to chlorine and provided our wee ones with 50+ sun protection so all we had to do was lather lotion on their limbs and faces.

All my kids where protective clothing in the sun. My husband had a level 4 melanoma on his back which required a 6"x3" football shaped area to be cut out leaving him with a 6" frankenstein scar and forever worrying that it might be in his body (even though the 6 lymph nodes they removed tested clean). While we are not afraid of the sun we understand what a bad sunburn can do. Also for those resting under sunshades and umbrella's make sure they have sun protection too.
1I love these. And in the long run they're cheaper than sunscreen anyway. They last well more than one season, even with a fast-growing child.
