Lil Tip: Make the Glucose Test Go Down Easier

Somewhere between the 26th and 28th week of pregnancy, women have to take a glucose screening test to check for gestational diabetes. In the past, it was a sugary orange soda type drink, which is apparently being changed to a lemon lime flavor. Neither sound that appealing but one thing that can help the "medicine" go down a bit smoother — ice cubes!

Before you head in for your glucose test, remember to bring a cup of ice with you to the doctor's office. Pour the liquid on top and chug it with more ease than a lukewarm glass would offer.

The appointment before the glucose test my doctor gave me a bottle of the orangey stuff to take home with me so I could drink it an hour before the next appointment. It was supposed to be refrigerated, though. I wonder if he told me that so it would be cold or if it really needed to be refrigerated. Hmmmm....

I was given the drink to refrigerate at home and drink before I went to the appointment. The doctor said it tasted better cold but it was my choice if I wanted to drink it warm. I am not sure of your advice, though. I was clearly told NOT to add ice as it could dilute the drink and could cause wrong blood sugar readings. There are very strict rules about no food, gum, mints, ice, even no teeth brushing before you have your blood sugar levels taken after having the drink. Certainly ask your doctor before bringing a cup of ice to your appointment or adding ice at home.

I got mine to take home and had a choice of a couple flavors. The sheet I got from the doctor said do not add ice.

Mommy of Three and Courtney82, that's so interesting. My OB/GYN was the one who gave me this tip just yesterday. Every doctor is different though.

I'm a certified phlebotomist and worked in a lab before I had kids. You shouldn't add ice, it diultes it and can mess up the reading. This is especially important for the 3-hour GTT. We had a lot of patients request ice and we couldn't give it, but we always refridgerated the beverage.

Here we're given a choice of a cola flavor, orange, or lemon-lime. I personally prefer the lemon-lime, and at room temp.

I don't recommend asking the doctor, I recommend calling ahead to the lab. Often we found that doctors had no idea what was required for the actual lab work, which is scary. For instance, fasting before the one-hour isn't always necessary, and doctors often had no idea what to recommend as the "light breakfast" before your appointment. And very few doctors knew that the fast before the 3 hour GTT was absolute, and often told their patients it was ok to have mints, gum, and even a piece of toast.

There is also fruit punch aka red flavor.
My ob and the lab place keep them in the fridge to be nice and cold.

I just took the test the other day. I just drank it cold from the fridge. It really isn't as bad as others have said.

I was given the bottle and told to refrigerate it at home, and then I drank it an hour before I came in. It tasted like really sugary Kool Aid, not really as horrible as I was worried it would be.
