Close Case Before Finding Missing Child?

My heart leapt into my throat when I read a report that Portuguese prosecutors will examine the police report before deciding whether to drop the investigation or take further inquiries on the Madeleine McCann case. Last May, the 3-year-old disappeared from the resort room where she slept with her two year-old twin siblings while their parents dined out.

It's hard to imagine that the case could be closed (though they could reopen it at any point) with a young child's life at stake. What is your opinion?

How can they just stop looking? She has to be somewhere: dead or alive - they must find her. If I were her parents I would never stop looking.

I can understand that resources are limited, but how can you call a case "closed" when it is unsolved? That poor girl Sad

as a mother i would never stop whether the police stop i would never, but at the same time i feel this was an inside job, i honestly think the parents were involved, a pedophile would have had a blast with 3 kids why just one and why her the oldesti think this is another case of jon bennett ramsey

yeah it seems very sketchy. Who leaves their children alone in a strange country?? Isn't that against the law in most places? Of course I don't know much about this story.

I don't know how to vote on this one. A missing child is the worst nightmare and yet I understand that the police don't have leads and other crime is occurring while they still have the same amount of police to do the work. So although I don't think anyone would ever want to hear that the case is closed, it seems like it has to happen at some point. My heart goes out for this little girl. I don't know about the parents or not. And at this point, I don't believe JonBenet Ramsey's parents killed her, either. I've seen several shows where independent investigators have put holes in that theory.

As sad as it is, the chances of her being alive is pretty much nil, so I think the investigators/prosecutors should move on and allocate the resources to cases where they can still make a difference. If the parents want to continue looking with their own private help, that is their right and makes sense.

i don't know the details from this case, but any normal parent would never want the case closed. i just think if that was my child, i would die before i stopped looking for my child.

Why close the case? Can't they leave it open, but devote fewer resources to it? I understand that the police are dealing with limited resources and that new crimes are being committed every day that need their attention, but it just doesn't make sense that you would mark a case "closed" when there hasn't been a resolution to it.

This story totally breaks my heart! The parents made a really bad judgement call leaving their child alone (apparently, the say the bar they went to with friends was only 2 blocks away and one of the adults went back to check on the kids every half hour, but geez, ALOT can happen in a half hour!)...I could never stop looking and I am sure they won't either. It would definately be hard to keep up a search without the help of the police, especially in a foreign country!

Other - don't close it, but don't devote so much time and resources to a case with no leads.

I think the parents are involved as well.

Poor people, they can never really be happy again. I do not think the parents are involved, I think the early police work was a shambles. My heart goes out to them, I hope they find some peace.

wtf..who would leave their kids alone to go out to a bar with some friends. I think that going out isn't that important.and whoever said alot can happen in a half of hour is so right. You can even have your kids with you and turn your back for 2 minutes and they are gone. I also think the parents were involved.

I agree -- the parents seems sketchy. Also, aren't they both physicians?? I would think they would have been more responsible and intelligent. JMHO.
