Has Motherhood Made Your Posture Worse?

After pregnancy, breastfeeding, and bending down to pick up my lil one, I traded in my head up, shoulders back posture for a more rounded one. Mothers slouch to bear the weight of their babies and crouch over their meandering tots.

Other - it got better. Pregnancy makes me lean back to accomodate the weight, as does holding the kids.

I don't know if it's my posture exactly, but my shoulder is forever damaged from bouncing a crying baby around at 3am every night for a year! She's 4 and a half years old and my shoulder is still not right!

Actually now I think about it, in a way yes my posture has improved, but that's because my physio made me walk better in order to help the back problem caused by my pelvis coming apart during pregnancy!

i slouch just as much as i did before (and usually only at my desk at work) the rest of the time... i think i stand straighter than i used to... or maybe a little to the left, to accomodate our lil guy on my hip.

I definitely slouch more! After my c-section, it hurt to stand up straight to begin with, and then after that, I just got lazy!

As a male I only ever have to carry food babies, so the impact on your back of carrying a baby sounds pretty major. However, I have had back pain in the past through sitting badly at my computer. As a result I developed award-winning personal posture coaching software.

If you use a computer a lot and struggle with back pain, or just want to improve your posture in its own right, why not give the free trial a go on my website www.postureminder.co.uk/backpain

Trying not to sound like a total science nerd... your posture WILL actually change. There are four curves of your spine, two are permanent and two will change based on need. That's why sometimes after having kid we'll tend to almost sort of.. waddle. The curve of your spine changes in order to accommodate the weight of pregnancy and then the weight of carrying the kids. Good news is, it will change back when the need changes.

I've never waddled after having a child, only in the last few weeks of pregnancy when my pelvis has spread to make it impossible for my legs to move straight.

Breastfeeding is trashing my back. I accidentally end up leaning forward to nurse her. I end up having back spasms and pain from it.

I had beautiful ballet posture before, and now- well, between sitting at a desk all day and the kiddos it is awful. Even the wiifit b*tches at me about it.

I don't know if it's from my babies or from my giant boobs (breastfeeding) but my posture has definitely gotten worse.
