Baby Bump: Prenatal Diet May Mean Early Periods

What you eat while pregnant, may affect more than your waistline. A recent study claims that a woman's prenatal diet may influence the age at which her unborn daughter will begin to menstruate. For expecting ladies who indulge their taste buds with ice cream, cookies and other fattening treats, this news may be unwelcome.

Doctors from the University of Auckland conducted a study using pregnant lab rats. During their pregnancy and nursing period, some were fed high fat diets. The remaining rats were given standard rat fare. In addition to the mother's diet being monitored, the researchers monitored the baby rats' diets, which were also divided into fatty and regular food. The results showed that regardless of the baby rat's diet, the rats whose mothers were fed high fat diets while in utero started to menstruate earlier than their counterparts.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Deborah Sloboda said:

This might suggest that the fetal environment in high-fat fed mothers plays a greater role in determining pubertal onset than childhood nutrition.

well with my first daughter i had the best pregnancy diet, very careful about being healthy. daughter #1 started puberty at 7 and got her period at 9 years, 9 months. daughter #2 was born 12 months later and i didn't have the time or energy to be so healthy. she is 9 years, 3 months and has just started showing signs of puberty. so for us at least this isn't the case.

Wow, I guess I was an extremely late bloomer starting at 14/15! I know that my mom ate lots of ice cream (her biggest weakness) when she was pregnant with me too. There are so many different factors that are pointed at to explain how early girls are starting puberty so early. Maybe the high fat prenatal diet makes kids more susceptible to other causes?

It just seems like it gets earlier and earlier. I was 11 and I was def. one of the first girls in my class to start. Seems crazy that so many girls start at nine now! I don't even know if I knew what it was at nine.

if this interests you, you should read 'skinny b*tch' a newish bestseller, to learn why this is true. (its shocking and disturbing but with a positive message.) most high-fat diets include dairy, eggs, and/or meat. eating those things affects peoples hormones because there is little regulation on how much chemicals and hormones can be used on/fed to american livestock, and hormones mean more bang for the buck for the farm owners. you do not need cow milk for osteoporosis or anything else-- the dairy industry is fooling you! babies get 'happy-drugs' when they drink mommy milk, and similar 'happy drugs' (think its some dopamine but i am not a science person, sorry) are in cow milk, icecream and ESPECIALLY CHEESE, which is why cheese is so addictive Sad... read the book, it is amazing Laughing out loud
