Family Ties: Cousins

Growing up, I don't think I realized the important roles that my cousins played in my life. We saw each other at our grandmother's house and played doctor and school while our parents drank cocktails downstairs, but I had no idea they would become some of my best friends. Now as a parent and aunt, I am starting to enjoy the perks of my extended family and hoping to pass the same familial connections onto my lil one.

While visiting home this week, my daughter played with her cousins and second cousins nearly every day. She knew their names and faces from pictures on our refrigerator door, but this trip provided her the rare opportunity to have a tea party with my sister's daughters and chow down with her second cousins over meals. This morning, they sat next to each other in their high chairs and gave each other high fives while noshing on donuts. Having playmates back in San Francisco is a treasure. Having cousins close in age is a blessing.

That's awesome! I'm so lucky to have cousins close in age, too, and my husbands family is all busy procreating Sticking out tongue so my daughter will too. I agree, it is a blessing. It would be nice if we lived closer together, but regardless it is special.

I recently saw 10 of my cousins at a family reunion, some of whom I hadn't seen in over seven years! It was so amazing to catch up with them and to find out about the cool things they're up to right now. I spent most of my childhood hanging out with them, and hope that when I have children, they can have that type of experience, too. Go cousins!

I have cousins but most of them are way younger. My daughter is lucky enough to have one that is 3 months older than her. I also babysit her one to two weeks out of the month, so they get plenty of play time. I can't wait to watch them grow up together.

My dad was a lot younger than his siblings (the smallest gap was 14 years). So all of my cousins are A LOT older than me. Needless to say, I never had the cousin experience.

My bf on the other hand...has like 30 cousins, and he's grown up with the majority of them. It's so strange to talk about our family differences!

I have a female cousin that is 2 weeks older than me. We were(are) super close and went to elementary school together and were always at my grandmother's... love those memories! Then my family moved away (about an hour) and we saw each other less and less. But when we get together now it is like no time has ever gone by. We are still close and enjoy talking about all our adventures and still have them!

My kids may or may not have cousins close in age. It is all b/c my siblings and I are pretty stretced out in years. My older brothers are 31 & 28. The 31 yr old is done having kids... they have 5 between the two of them (ages:12, 9, 7, 6, 5). And my other brother and his wife may or may not have kids... they are undecided. But if they do have kids it will probably be around the same time I do (3-4 years). Then my sister is younger than me by 4 yrs (she's 17) so by the time she has kids I'll probably already have mine all had and they will be a little older. So all the cousins will probably be stretched out through a lot of years.

Love my huge family and the TON of cousins I have. Our family likes to joke that we have outside friends because we really want to have them not because we need them because my best friends are my cousins. Also in our family we all have different age groups and blocks of cousins/family like the 40 year olds, 30 yo and down. Makes it funny when you are waaaayyy younger than ur nieces or nephews!!!!

Two of my cousins were raised as our brother and sister. We all live on the same large area of land and when we were kids, my aunt kept us every day. They really are truly the same. One of them passed away last year, and it was the same as losing my brother. I hope my kids are close to their cousins.

I'm an only child and my cousin (who is a year younger than me), was basically like my little brother. We saw each other everyday because we would go to my grandparents' after school and we fought like brother and sister. Now he's at college in Boston, but when he comes home we hang out and go out for drinks and stuff, but our relationship has definitely gotten better the more we matured haha.

My son is meeting his cousins for the first time tomorrow! They are coming to stay with us for a few days. However, they are quite a bit older, but it's still fun. I only had 3 first cousins and was never close to any of them. I hope my son can be to his.

my husband and his 2 brothers each have daughters born the same year. rather than being a happy thing, it's a competition to see who has the highest grades, is the best at (fill in the blank), etc. with the grandparents acting as judges. (they are 9 years old btw).

because of the way my in-laws raised their boys i knew this would happen so i have always been very honest with my girls: they will not be happy for you. my girls know they cannot be themselves with their cousins and that their "other" grandparents try and make the kids compete. the occasional get-togethers are uncomfortable.

my fil once said to my sil's child "wow, so you are the only one who doesn't play piano. you play soccer and softball, huh? sure you're a girl?" i thought it was going to be really fun for my sil's and i to have our babies together, but there has been nothing fun about it. the competition thing is too deep in this family.

I wish my children were growing up closer to their cousins. I don't have many cousins, but the memories I have are priceless.

I come from a big family so I loved having my cousins around all the time, we all got lucky because it seemed like we were born in pairs so we had this buddy (me & my cousin are 1yr apart, her sister & my sister are 1yr apart etc.) my daughter doesn't have that many cousins that live near by unfortunately but whenever she sees them she lights up and it makes my heart melt Smiling I am hoping I'll be able to have a big family so that my nieces & nephews can have tons of cousins to play around with!

My cousin and I are each others best friend and confidant and grew up together we were together every weekend and we still talk on the phone to each other every day. and I'm instilling that with my kids they see their cousins every weekend and have sleepovers because as the saying goes "Friends will come and go out of your life but Family will always be there for you" I think it is great that people are starting to realize that family is the core to a fullfilled life.

My cousins are all close in age...but all about 20 years younger than me, haha. I have one cousin who is two weeks older than me, but she's actually my dad's cousin. Oh the trouble we've caused!
