How Do You Tackle Adult Subjects Around Tots?

In one of my favorite scenes in the Sex and the City movie, the gals sit around their favorite brunch table with Charlotte's adopted daughter, Lily, and attempt to talk about sex without using any graphic words. They end up improvising by comparing it to "coloring." While it made for a hilarious rift in the film, talking about adult subjects in front of children is always dicey. Most parents create their own grown up lingo, spell out the naughty words or reserve inappropriate talk for nap time. How do you keep the conversation rated G around your lil one?

That scene was really funny. I don't have kids, but when I used to babysit, I generally just used grown up lingo around the kids. With a well-placed wink or nod, the other adult will understand what you mean. It's almost fun.

My family was always open about those things with us kids so I don't really think I'd censor myself too much but I usually just keep that talk for later on after my girl is sleeping Smiling

I spell everything out. But now that my son can read it's not working so well. The coloring metaphor in the movie was creative.

I have a family of spellers. My sister and I learned to spell quickly so we could get in on the gossip.

I've never discussed sex specifics in front of them. It's not something I've deliberately censored, it's just never happened. My friends/family and I simply naturally choose to discuss specifics when kids aren't around.

Then again, I don't talk sex specifics much at all. What goes on in my bedroom is between me and my husband, I've never felt the need tos hare.

My lil brother knew how to spell candy, REALLY early. He loved candy! C-A-N-D-Y. His eyes & face would perk up and he knew what we were talking about!

haha, that was off subject but Lilsugar's comment reminded me.
