While pregnant, my heightened sense of smell picked up even the slightest scent of smoke and made me nauseous. And, maybe more than a few of our lilsugar readers felt the same way as 58 percent of you said the sight of a pregnant woman smoking incensed you more than catching a woman with child sipping a cocktail. Medically speaking, we should be just as leery of lil ones being around cigarette smoke. It doesn't matter if a parent, caretaker or stranger indulges. According to WebMD, there is evidence that no amount of smoke inhalation is without repercussions. It said:
The findings add to the growing body of evidence that suggests that there is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also called environmental tobacco smoke, contains an array of harmful chemicals, including nicotine, which have been shown to increase one’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Exposure to such smoke causes upwards of 50,000 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers every year in the United States, making it a major public health concern.
Do you make an effort to keep your kids in a smoke free environment?

Neither my husband nor I smoke, so that makes things in the house easier.
1Any smoking guests are required to smoke outside and wash up thoroughly upon returning to the house.
My sister smokes. I kept a change of clothes at my house for her to wear when she came over when my kids were newborns. She thought I was crazy, but the chemicals and nicotine permeate clothing and leach in to delicate skin.
I have asthma so I take this very seriously.
There seems to be a correlation among my friends between smoking parents and emotional problems in their children. If parents smoke, that also increases the chances of their children smoking when they grow up. Just one more reason not to smoke!
As for strangers smoking around children, I hate it!!! When my parents used to bring me to casinos, I used to hold my nose and try not to breathe the whole time I was there! I also used to yell at random smokers on the sidewalk, telling them not to smoke around children! I was really a pain in the butt, but I bet my little lectures had some impact on those people!
2I don't even know anyone who smokes so we don't have to worry about people smoking around our kids. The restaurants here are all smoke free and even the bowling alleys are smoke free now so I don't think my kids have ever even smelled cigarette smoke. In this day and age I don't know why anybody would even smoke at all, let alone around children.
And my mom was the same way when I was younger, AFRY. She would tell people off for smoking in public and make them move away from us. It used to be sooo embarrassing for me when I was a kid but I am really grateful now because I was never really exposed to smoke as a child and never even considered smoking as a teen or young adult.
3here in california you aren't allowed to smoke w/i 20 feet of the door to buildings. but lots of restaurants and all the indoor malls i've been to have people RIGHT THERE w/i 5 feet of the door smoking. i hate it for my kids and for the smell. why does anyone start smoking these days? honestly, it's not like we don't know it's bad for you, it's addictive and expensive.
