Bringing food over to a new family is a time honored tradition for some people. Unfortunately, the classic comfort foods that transport well — macaroni and cheese, casseroles and lasagnas — aren't always the most healthy. So if you plan to gift a dish when you go visit a new delivery, why not make a homemade version that is just as hearty, but more healthful? To see some suggestions, read more.

Simply swapping out regular pasta noodles for whole wheat ones or adding a few handfuls of fresh veggies will help a postpartum mom keep her strength up and supply her baby with vital nutrients while breastfeeding. Other ingredients to consider are fresh fruit, whole grains, and lean proteins. And, ideally you should cook with unprocessed fresh foods. Since new mamas eat when babe allows, a pot of soup or stew that can be heated quickly in individual portions is a great option, as is a crudités platter for midday munching.

Anything I can eat with one hand, which rules out almost everything.

I made a vegetarian lasagna with whole wheat noodles, reduced fat cheeses, spinach & mushrooms for a coworker who's wife was expecting. I froze it and brought it into him. They just had the baby so they'll probably eat it soon. It was actually pretty healthy. I'm scared I hope they like it. I usually taste test everything I make, but I couldn't really with this one!

I'm hoping whenever I have a baby the karma will rub off and people will make me stuff! Only knowing my luck I'll end up with the fattening, cheesy, stuff my relatives love to make!

Something small and easy for a quick fix. That soup looks excellent. Maybe something you can keep warm in crock pot?
I tend to eat a lot of cereal in the first few months.

As a new mom, a favorite for me is a veggie-loaded stir fry. If I'm strapped for time (which I almost always am these days, between job and new baby) I buy the frozen stir fry veggies from Trader Joes and throw it together at home with some chicken breast. I can take or leave a rice or pasta to go with it if I'm needing some carbs.

yes is that vietnamese soup? Or Korean Pho? It reminds me of the episode of A baby story I saw on TLC when the mommy was Asian and her mother kept this big earthenware pot of soup ready for her when she was ready to eat. I thought that was a really nice custom that isnt thought here since soup isn't really that substantial.
