While birthday festivities should focus on the child being celebrated, the trend of outlandish bashes seems to do just the opposite.
Instead of highlighting the five–year–old, crazed mothers spend oodles of money to enter the "look at me" competition amongst the mommy clan.
Over the Top Productions is a company that encourages this behavior by planning extravagant fetes for lil ones. Some parties cost parents up to $10,000. I'd rather put that into a savings account for my wee one.
When I heard that Moses Martin had a fiesta at a Mexican restaurant in NYC, I was proud of Gwyneth and Chris for providing their son with some sort of normalcy in a not–so–normal life.
But then I heard that Suri Cruise had a $5,000 birthday cake for her second birthday (pictured above). Now really, can you honestly tell me that Suri prefers fondant to butter cream frosting? I think not. But amongst her pals, Katie Holmes might get "Mommy of the Year" for her billable efforts.

honestly, I think Katie Holmes should NOT get mother of the year for doing this ridiculous party! Give me a break!!! All kids want is a fun day with their friends and a nice cake to eat, some ice cream, and party games. And maybe a few gifts. When my daughter got older...15...we started asking her what kind of party she wanted and usually it meant the local ice cream shoppe(a very old fashioned type place) or a nice dinner at a fondue restaurant. The most I ever spent on a bday celebration for either of my kids was $400 and that included a character coming, all the favors, pizza, and cake.

2Hell no, not even if I had the money. Kids could care less about how much money is spent. Plus, it sets up a habit where the kid grows up expecting this year to be better than the last. Ingratitude is bred. Sounds like it's Katie's party more than it is Suri's.

7My favorite part of my children's birthdays is letting them decorate their own cake the night before. They are so proud when I cut and serve it. I wouldn't trade it for this fancy one.
8I think someone hit the nail on the head when they said that 10k may be their $100. When you have millions, $10k doesn't seem that big. Prices just don't matter when you can afford everything. I'm sure in their minds they are just getting things they like/taste good. Where as in my mind, I'm going, "What's wrong with WinnDixie's cakes??" ; )

could she then go and get her just a regular $100 cake? It's really obvious to me that Katie is enjoying the financial advantages of her marriage to Cruise. I have no respect for her.
10Graylen, I partly agree with you, but I think that when someone who had a normal upbringing (like Katie Holmes) tosses all that out the window the moment they come across $$$ says a lot. To me it says she has no appreciation for the way she was raised, she wants to raise her child in a completely different manner, surrounded by luxury. What was so wrong with her upbringing that she doesn't want to raise Suri the same way?
11i wouldn't, but in the circles my kids run in pin the tail on the donkey wouldn't cut it AT ALL. last weekend my 7 year old went to the birthday party of a classmate. 2 jump houses (one princess castle forget the other one), clowns, cotton candy machine, slurpy machine, several carnival type games and a magic show. there were about 25 kids there. the party was on the tennis courts (yes that's plural) in the birthday girls backyard. this was not the fanciest party my kids have been too. when you have the money you spend it.
12That is insane! I can't imagine spending that much money for a little kids party. Like they care! It is all for the parents and for them showing off and I think it does set a bad example for the kids.
13As I'd said on another baby site, I feel like Kate/Katie Holmes is trying so hard to show off her wealth, that everything she buys or organises must be opulent, extravagant and over the top. That is the way she has chosen to show off. She doesnt seem to understand that many times, the simplest and cheapest things in life are the best. Wonder what kind of lifestyle she led before marrying into Scientology

1510,000 on a party ? No it wouldn't be something that I would do.I can't think of a more useless way to waste money. I 'd rather put it in an account for my daughter's future which is a forever thing than 4 hours of a very expensive, showy birthday celebration .Kids at Suri's age can't tell the difference between fondant on a 5,000 dollar birthday cake or buttercream on a $45 cake.That's way over the top IMO....

17That's ridiculous. IF I were extremely wealthy, I might CONSIDER it for a 16th or perhaps an 18th birthday, but no way in HELL would I do it for a toddler!
I have put both of my kids birthday parties together for less than 50 bucks when they were little. It's not hard, it just takes imagination. I guess when you have money, imagination isn't important.
18Ummm...no. I think the most I've ever spent on a bday party for my son was $100 altogether. That included the cake (Safeway) tablecloth and paper plates, pizza and drinks from Chuck E Cheese's and a couple of invitations. We even made our own decorations for his cake this year. And my son had a blast. That's disgusting that anyone would pay that much for ANY type of cake...wow.
19I wouldn't do it, but I don't condemn anyone else for doing it. it's their money, they can do with it what they want. It's all about choices and that's what we teach our children.
20Wow, this is just so offensive to me. There are so many more worthwhile things people could be spending money on than a $5,000 cake for a 2-year-old! The fact that there is a company devoted to these things is just silly.

Money may not mean much to stars who have millions, but I definitely agree that in those cases it ends up being a competition between the moms with little or no regard for what the kids want to do.
24It is sooo sad to me that Katie Holmes is in such desperate need of acceptance from her own little daughter that she would go through great lengths to prove her love to Suri by throwing her a ridiculously overpriced birthday party...Suri is sooo young if she had spent only 1,000 dollars on that birthday party she probably could have gotten the same amenities she had for way less money and Suri would not have even known the difference. If a woman would buy a 5,000 dollar cake for this kid what the hell is she going to spend on her sweet 16 and wedding. I shutter to think of the future cost. and will it be good enough for Suri? By then probably not....because she is instilling in her daughter the wrong values of money. we are in a recession for God's sake...get a grip Katie!!!!!
