My children couldn't care less about the loot in their toy boxes or drawer full of DVDs. While those things occupy them at home, they are outside kids to the core.
Nothing makes them happier than tearing across an open field, climbing a playground structure, or splashing in water. Lil ones thrive from feeling the sun or wind on their faces and being able to run free without the confines walls and ceilings. But, I'm not sure if it's nature or nurture with our offspring. To see why, read more.
My husband and I have taken them everywhere since infancy. If my daughter dozed off as tot, she'd wake up to the click of the garage door opener and complain, "No! Let's go somewhere else."
On the rare occasion when we stay in for a length of time, my son puts on a hat or sweatshirt and heads to the front door saying, "Bye. Bye."
You can stock up on the latest and greatest trinkets or sit them in front of their favorite film, but nothing compares to fresh air.

And being barefoot!
1wow, those are some cute kids!
2Amen! Izzy's favorite word is "outside!" I'm so glad that the sun is coming!
3I like on NJ and it's JUST starting to get kind of warm some days. My daughter is going to be 2 this month. She is impossible to get into the house. We've been taking her outside a lot and no matter how much, it's NEVER enough. She is practically gripping the door way wiht jaws of life it seems every time we bring her in the house. After that she throws a tantrum for a while and she keeps going back to her window spot and cries and says OU SIDE over and over.
It's very sad. I'm glad she loves the outside, as our entire family does, at this point I'm scared I'm going to have to pitch a tent in the yard this summer for her to live in!
4Whoops like=Live
5That is such a beautiful picture!
6My girls are the same way--can't get enough of the outdoors.
7My 18th month old will cry and have a fit until she's outside. She can't wait for her coat, hat and shoes to be on. And if I turn back to grab a forgotten item she's in hysterics until we're outside.
8i hope my children crave the out doors!!!!
9I think it is natural for all kids to like the outdoors, at least all the kids I have met. My kids are content playing inside or watching TV for awhile but the second you say the word "outside" they are running to find their shoes. Then you can't drag them in until it's dark, and even then they would stay out all night if they could.
10One of my favorite memories as a kid was when I lived in Virginia and we would stay out late and catch "lightning bugs" at dusk with the kids from the neighborhood. The parents would all stand around talking and the weather was perfect. I wish we had them here for my kids but it's too dry.
11abqmama - I was going to say the same thing. Aren't all kids like this...!? Maybe older kids who have been conditioned to sit on the couch and watch tv all day come to "prefer" sedentary activities, but I don't think I've ever met a child under the age of 5 who didn't live for outside play.
12Oh I loved outside when I was younger!
13I still do, but sadly I hardly get to go out. Sometimes when it is really nice out I will go across the street to the park and read my homework outside! LOVE IT!!
I really, really, really hope my son will be an outside kid.
abqmama- I'm in VA and we still go outside and try to catch lighting bugs!!
14My daughter is definitely an outside kid. She will want to go out even when it's raining. And who am I to deny her that? LOL
15My husband and I are both outside people (rainy days result in child-like stir craziness). We're expecting a little boy this summer and hope he'll outside kid too
16My 2 y/o can't get enough of the outdoors, either! Whenever I take her to outdoor activities with my friends, she is the only one who will stay outside no matter the weather. I always end up eventually carrying her kicking and screaming to my car b/c she simply cannot transition back to an indoor activity when everyone else does. Once outdoor time becomes too much, we just have to leave!
