Peroxided heads have long been considered pageant girl pretty, but now more and more mainstream tweens are heading to salons to take advantage of their services. And, it's their parents who foot the bill.

Gone are the days of the simple cut and blow dry — young ladies between the ages of eight and 12, some as young as six — are chemically treating their hair to get the natural and bold effects of highlights and lowlights. And, the intensity of the finished looks vary from subtle streaks to funky chunks.
A recent New York Times article about the trend said:
Hair treatments like shiny glosses or full-color dye plus highlights, once reserved for women with salaries and mortgages, have increasingly become the norm for pre-pubescent girls as more busy parents with discretionary income are willing to pay salon prices for what used to be done at home.
Would you pay for your tween to dye her 'do?

I didn't let my daughter do anything to her hair until she was 13 and even then I thought it was too early. But, she begged me to get some natural looking highlights. A good friend who used to do hair did them for her and they came out really great. Very natural looking. From then on....she was a monster!!! LOL. Now, she is 19 and gets her hair cut and dyed every 2-3 months.
1A tween? Never.
2Yeah so not happening until she is a junior in high school.
3That's crazy. I had done my first highlights when I was 21 years old and now I´m 23 years old and I go to the hairdresser's twice a year. I guess that so much hairdresser's affect girls' brain.
4My mom won't even let my little sister who is 15 years old blow dry her hair yet because she says that it'll ruin her hair and these parents are letting their pre-pubescent girls chemically treat their hair?
5Hmm... I'm 21 and all I've ever done was have cuts and a body wave. I think about 16 or so would be the time to start... maybe even older. My mom won't let my sister get hers colored and she's 17.
6haven't seen any of this here, and some of the parents at my girls school are over the top. my girls get their hair cut and blown out every 3 months and the occasional mani/pedi as a very special treat (birthday, last day of school). i'm not even sure they knew people changed the color of their hair until i dyed mine recently.
what a sad trend. how much younger can girls be before we tell them they aren't "good enough" as they are?
7My daughter can get highlights when she can foot the bill.
8The whole tween phenomenon horrifies me. Don't puberty and the teen years come soon enough?
9I don't have a daughter but I would never let her get anything like this done until she was at least in high school. Some of these kids are looking way to old for their age.
10No way. I'm 19 and haven't felt the need to dye/highlight/otherwise destroy my hair, and it looks just fine. So no daughter of mine will be getting pricey hair stuff done. (Heck, I don't even use a blow-dryer. Virgin hair all the way!)
11They'll probably regret messing with their hair so much so soon when they're older and I don't get why girls need to "grow up" so soon.
12I didn't get my first salon haircut until I was 15, and I had to beg my mom.
13When I was 13 my mom let me get blonde highlights; I'd go and get hightlights & a hair cut every 4months. It was fun and it wasn't overdone. However 12 and under should not get dye jobs, chemical straightings, etc.. that is just too much, too young. When I have children they can not get any dye in their hair until 13+ yrs of age. When they turn 13 then I'll offer them a chance to get highlights & the regular hair cut/style however nothing else.
14I wouldn't let my tween (if i had one) dye her hair or get highlights or straighten her hair or curl it. Basically no treatments until she's about 15 or 16! but salon hair cuts..umm definitely! And waxing is fine too after 13, especially if the kid is hairy.
15When I was 11-12 my mom let me dye my hair--I actually wanted to do it at home and she absolutely wouldn't let that happen.
16I was going through a mega major awkward phase--chubby (to put it nicely), puberty just hitting like a ton of bricks, and I desperately wanted a change. So I dyed my hair red until I was 14 when I realised that my laziness about touching up the roots made me look worse than if I just had my natural colour.
Now I'm 19 and I let it be.
If I ever have a daughter, she will have to wait until she's 13 or 14 before she can even consider hair coloring/highlights or whatever. My mom made me wait, and I never thought anything of it. I started dying my hair the summer I was 13.
17i let my daughter get her hair colored when she was 9
18for a pageant my daughter got her hair colored when she was 4
19omg my mom let me cut and dye my hair when i was like about 10 or 11 and im turning 12 this year moms who dont let their kids just get a simple little cut r waaaaaaaaay to strict. my first hair cut i got was when i was 5 and i got 3in. off and when i was 11 i got my bangs cut and dyed pink! and my parents were totally ok with it they just want me to ask them before i do anything with my hair. and if they approve i can get it done they r like the best parents ever when it comes to my hair!
20im a tween. i'm 11 and i know three people in my grade that highlight their hair. Two of them look natural, and one is bright pink. They all look good, but I don't think they should be doing that. If you really want highlights, put lemon-juice in your hair and then go in the sun. it doesnt have to be summer, just sunny. It will brighten up your natural highlights!
