Naming Your Baby: Before or After Birth?

Star recently reported that Jessica Alba is having a baby girl and plans to name her Honor Warren.

While it's just speculation at this point (apparently one of the guests at her baby shower had a gold and bead charm bracelet that spelled out "Honor" made for the baby), it got me thinking.

Did you (or would you) name your baby before it was born?

I am so indecisive that I would change my mind on the name up until I met the child. So I would have a name in mind, but I would not tell others or get things monogrammed until after the birth.

For both our daughter, we decided on a name long before the birth. However I can imagine that sometimes you have a few favorites to pick from and wait to decide which one until the baby is born. Personally I'd worry that because of the emotion of the moment and being tired after labor I might pick the wrong name, so I prefer to decide beforehand!

With my oldest daughter we had a couple of names we liked and I chose after she was born (actually as she was born). For my 2nd daughter we had a name chosen months ahead of her birth.

When I was pregnant I had a couple of names in mind that I liked but I am so indecisive...then when she was born I was like ok this is the name, that's it. Then it was a c-section and I was in a lot of pain,so there where other most important things in my mind than her name,...lol

We were fairly certain of the name a few months before his birth, but made the final decision in Anthropologie when I just wanted to buy the name letters for the nursery we were decorating and didn't want to think on it any longer. Heh.

I'm a planner, so there was never any doubt we would have a name picked out before birth.

Before! Me, my mother, granny and a few of my cousins would be so excited for me to get preggers!
I do however want meaningful names. Nothing that has to do with a Jewel, flower, car, celebrity or even a type of pencil...lol

I do not have any kids but I already have their names picked out. I am dead set on the name for my future daughter.

We had two names to choose from before my son was born and decided on one after he came out. We already have names for out next one so I like naming before but just not telling anyone Laughing out loud

Well, we didn't know the sex of the last baby, so we just had a few "maybe" names... Smiling We named her after she came

We have the boys name picked out.
I was dead set on a couple of names for my daughter until I met my guy and he doesn't like either of them! lol So we picked another one, but I am not in love with it like the last one. So it will probably change.

With my (so soon to be here) son my hubby and I had his name picked out from the second we knew we were pregnant. We could never agree on a girl's name though. Thankfully we are having a boy, and had his name set, but I have no idea what we would have done if we were having a girl! We probably still wouldn't have a name picked out and we're getting SO close to the end!

With my first son we had his name picked out several months before he was born, my second son was adopted so we didn't have a chance to pick names and did it the night he was born. My third son we had a list of 5 names when we went to the hospital and after I saw him I decided I didn't like any of them so the day after he was born we picked out something completely different.

I named our first son after he was born, my husband named our second son after he was born, he called me the next morning and told me he thought our other choice fit him better and he was right, so I have the card from the bassinet at the hospital with the first name crossed out and his "new" name on it. I think you need to meet your child before you can name them and even then, you may have second thoughts.

I've named all of my children so far beforehand, but I would change my mind at birth if it didn't suit the child upon meeting them face to face.

the naming process started as soon as I found out I was pregnant! It is so fun, I loved going through all the names with my husband. We made a list and had it narrowed down and then a different name came to us one day and we knew right then it was her name...

I don't know how I could wait until after. My husband and I are just now kicking around the idea of having a kid and I have a name for a boy and for girl that I am 100% dead set on. Also I am bad at making last minute choices, the little bundle would be walking before I settled on something..

We had narrowed our choices to three, with one that was the top contender. We had to meet him before the decision was final though. Immediately after he was born, we knew the top name was the right one and went with it.

we had a couple of names picked out for each baby and then after they were born and we had a look at them we made the final choice. it's funny because people always say our kids are the only kids they know that actually look like their names.

I like having the name picked out before. You can start referring to him or her, and talking to him or her beforehand. We're already talking "to" the baby and about her to people. It makes me feel closer to her by calling her by name. LOL

I had my son's name all picked out before he was born - Jacob Michael.

Yeah, then I actually saw him for the first time and I remember saying to my mom - "Grandma, meet Johnny! This is Jonathan Michael!"

He just didn't look like a Jacob to me. Smiling

I already know what names I like for both boys and girls, so when the time comes it won't be difficult for me to narrow down the final decision.

However, I would keep it a secret from everybody until after the birth.

Also, I really don't like the name Honor.

I have baby names already picked out. I have several and Ialways end up discarding some and changing the spelling and everything after a while so it wont surprise me if I end up not having it together when baby is born. Not that I'm heading down that rode right yet Sad

Lily, I actually like the name Honor. Its the Warren for a last name that throws it for me. Actually what last name would it fit with?

My parents took me home from the hospital and didn't give me a name for about two weeks. They eventually named me after my Aunt Carol. Two weeks and you think I would have a more interesting name.
I probably wont think of a name either until I actually have a baby.

My husband & I had a boy name & a girl name picked out quite early on. But now we know we're having a girl, and we know her name and I'm only 5 months along. I've actually known what I'd name my first girl for a few years. Luckily my hubby liked the name too. Smiling
