I Swear I Don't Swear (Most of the Time)

My babe is at the stage where she repeats EVERYTHING I say. It's fun most of the time, but can be a tad harrowing when someone drops a four–letter word in front of her.

Somehow my motherly instincts have severely curbed my cursing, but every now and again, I let one slip.

Just the other night she caught me by surprise as she dropped the "F" bomb. Shocked and appalled, I didn't know what to do. At 17–months–old, what good does scolding her for bad language do? And besides that, it wasn't her fault that she learned it and was simply repeating it. It was just like any other word.

To find out what happened, read more.

As I stared at her with wide eyes and dropped jaw, she reached forward and grabbed her frog and again said the "F" word. Much relieved, I excitedly said, "Yes! Frog! F–R–O–G!"

Phew. A close call for sure. It was a good reminder to mind my P's and Q's.

I hate to say it, but I need to start working on getting rid of my potty mouth now before my boy gets to be at this age.

That's one of my bad habits that I'd love to kick - and if I don't, I'm sure I'll be getting calls from daycare about him cussing someone out, lol

I once worked at an aftercare program for the YMCA and i was in charge of about 14 kindergartners, one day when a mother came to pick up her daughter the little girl says "i dont want to F-ing go home!" well, the lady turns to me and my boss and says "where did she learn that?" and we both said "I have no idea" and she went off on us about teaching her bad words...and as she is leaving, rummaging through her purse for her keys she says "I dont know where I F_ING put them"

Me, too, stina. I tend to swear quite a bit, as does my husband. Not my most attractive quality I admit. We have talked about being better, but it's sure a hard habit to break, especially in the heat of the moment like if you stub your toe or something--the "f" word just slips out. I think I'll be able to train myself to stop using the really bad words, but I keep getting called out by my nephews on words like "stupid" or "hate," which are now apparently garbage words or something.

My adorable 2 year old niece says the "F" word. My sister and her fiance have really been watching what they say around her and she won't stop. They would tell her not to say it and she would say it more, the dr. told them to ignore it but she still does it and she knows exactly how to use it. If she drops something she goes f----! It's amazing at that age how they now how to use the bad works. Hopefully she will get over it soon as she will be starting daycare soon. Smiling

My husband and I have a "swear jar"--need to put in a dollar for every swear word you get called out on.
I feel like we're doing pretty well with it.
    but
My daughter(3) recently called me out for calling driver that cut me off a " dude back". "You're not supposed to say that mommy." I had to agree with her and apologize. I am at my worst while driving.

schnappycat--"stupid" is definitely on the pre-school not-to-be--said list. My husband has a thing against "hate".
Sometimes it's hard to keep up.

My husband and I don't censor our language around our daughter. We believe they are just words and the only power they hold is the power you give them. She knows them all and sometimes uses them, but she also understands that it's not ok to say them around other children because their parents might be uncomfortable with it. We make the effort to broaden her vocabulary in many ways because we believe in self-expression. In our house, there is no such thing as "bad words".

I'm with stina and schnappycat on this. My h-band says I curse more than any girl he's even known (blush). I remember my mom letting some curse words slip when I was little (ok, maybe more than a few). She kicked the habit by wearing a rubber band on her wrist and every time she cursed she would snap the band a little. Sounds weird, but it worked! I may have to resort to the same method if I can't stop soon.

My husband and I used to swear alot. He still does, but I don't as much now that I am a SAHM. I was surprised that my kids never repeated any of the words. I think my oldest did once and we told him it wasn't a nice word and he never did again. I have problems with him saying "stupid", I have to keep reminding him not to say it.

Oh I used to not cuss very much... but then I started dating my b/f and he does a lot and I have gotten into the habit. I am able to keep it down in front of my parents and grandparents. Hopefully I'll be able to stop before I have kids.

Both my hubby and I have to watch what we say. All of our kids have used swear words once or twice. Mostly when they were little. I remember my 2year son looking out the window and saying "what the **ck?" My hubby said that all the time and still does. Monkey see, monkey do!

My daughter learned 's**t' from my husband. He didn't realize it at the time, but every time he changed a dirty diaper he said s**t. One morning I was changing a dirty diaper my daughter said s**t. It's is funny how a person can be so mad and crying from laughter at the same time.

Note that what you watch on TV can matter too...
My niece was visiting (4 y/o) and came out to the kitchen to talk to my mom and I, and we asked what her daddy (my brother) was doing. She said "Watching the guy he watches on TV but has a girl name" Confused, we asked "what guy?" and, to our dismay, she says "Mother F___"

Cute? yes. Good? probably not so much.

So, even though the parents don't curse much.... Think about that tv part too.

I've heard my SIXTEEN MONTH old use the f-word twice - both times copying me - and have been horribly horribly ashamed. It's a very short time between can't-talk and copies-everything and suddenly you have to check yourself. But no more swearing around her for me.

When I was a kid, my aunt used to let me and my sister watch Beetlejuice with her all the time. I remember going up to my mom and saying, "My favorite part is when he says, 'Nice f**king model!'" My mom was appalled. I knew it was a "bad" word but didn't know why or what it meant... I was just kind of testing it out. Smiling

My daughter is going to be 2 this month. Every once in a while she will come out with bad word and we just repeat something else that sounds like it. And then she forgets about the curse word.

The best thing that I found to help a child stop repeating a foul slip up is to not make a big deal out of it. If the child knows s/he will get a dramatic reaction out of saying a word, they will keep saying it!
Or, repeat the word differently ie: kids says sh*t, you say Sheep?
