For those desperate to have a babe of their own flesh and blood, intercourse alone doesn't always do the trick.
And when that happens, couples explore other avenues. To learn more about one non–traditional method, read more.
Many doctors prescribe Clomid to women in an effort to enhance their ovulation. If that doesn't work, insemination or IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) are often next steps. While these procedures often help couples reproduce, others look to acupuncture as another fertility tool.
Acupuncture is "a Chinese medical practice or procedure that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified sites of the body." While it sounds a little harrowing, many who receive the treatment say the needles don't hurt at all.
Some attribute the success of acupuncture to the lowering of stress and increasing the blood flow to the reproductive system. And although it doesn't guarantee a baby, it gives couples another option.
Have you tried acupuncture? Did it work?

I have antiphospholipid syndrome and I am positive for MTHFR which has resulted in 2 misscarriages. I started acupuncture as well as western medical treatments and now have a healthy boy. I am convinced the acupuncture was a huge help as some of the questions my acupuncturist asked were spot on and things none of my "regular" Dr's brought up.
1I worked for a doctor of acupuncture for 4 years. We treated many patients (mostly women) for infertility with excellent results. It did not work for everyone, but it worked for many.
Acupuncture is especially effective as assistance to IVF.
Acupuncture treatment can get expensive, but I would definitely recommend it.
Just make sure you doctor of acupuncture is licensed and certified acupuncturist. I'd also get word of mouth advice.
Upon request our office provided a list of patients willing to discuss the doctor and their experience with him and acupuncture.

2Luckily my insurance will cover 17 acupuncture visits per year and we start IVF in about 6-8 weeks so I am starting acupuncture soon too. A friend of mine did it when she did her IVF and she had a healthy baby girl on the first shot! I am hoping it will enhance mine too. I have recurrent losses so I think it will help. Heck...it can't hurt!!
3I can't speak for acupuncture (I'm not sure it would help in my case since we have both female and male infertility), but good luck with the IVF, faerymagick! I was also lucky to have a perfect son on my first cycle and I hope you are as successful!
4thx schnappycat! I love your name BTW! I am hoping it will work for us first time. We only have coverage for one try. I know its against the odds, especially at my age....I am 38. I hope to at least have some embryos to freeze though, we could pay for an FET on our own. Congrats on your little boy!!!
5That's great you have coverage for anything. We paid the whole $14K out of pocket. Eep! And don't worry too much about your age. I was 34 when we started and ended up with 6 embryos to freeze, so we are going to try a FET probably next year. I'm just so grateful for the technology to allow us to do this!
6Good luck faerymagick15! I hope you enjoy your treatments and get lucky with the IVF.
7awww, you guys are so sweet!!! schnappycat, the reason I have coverage is because I won an appeal with my insurance carrier. I know it doesn't happen often but yes, I am lucky. And we also just found out another plan my husband can get through work covers 3 attempts so we have options beyond this. I just know I don't want to put myself through this too many times. It takes such a toll.
8Thx again schnappycat and anniekim!
My husband and I tried for 2 1/2 years, with one miscarriage. After 3 rounds of IUI, I turned to acupuncture. After 5 weeks of acupuncture and one last IUI, we got pregnant. I'm proud to say that I'm 26 weeks and continue to go once a month. I absolutely love it and am convinced that acupuncture was responsible for this new little life.
