Baby Wellness: Fever Rule

Yesterday, one of my dear friends hosted an Easter egg hunt at her house for six mums and their tots.

My babe and I were supposed to attend, but sadly she woke up with a fever for the third day in a row. I was hoping that she would rise and shine in her usual spunky demeanor. Instead, she was cranky, hot and obviously not feeling up to par.

To see what happened, read more.

Instead of plucking pastel treats from the grass, we spent the afternoon in the doctor's office taking cultures for strep, which were thankfully negative.

But my question was and still is, how many days should you let pass before exposing your sick child to other children? Many moms believe if the fever is gone, all is well. I'm a tad more cautious. I prefer sick kiddos keep their distance for at least one healthy 24–hour period.

How much time do you let lapse after a sick day?

Depends why they have a fever: fever for flu can be two to five days and the kids shouldn't be exposed to anyone the entire time they're coughing or sneezing.

I have a 24-hour rule too: a child should be fever-free for 24 hours before venturing out and sharing toys etc with other kids.

I would wait 24 hours after the fever break before doing anything else. And if there is no infection of any kind, than OK to be around kids.

We just went through this with the flu and fevers for all of us. I follow the 24 hour without a fever rule as well- kids bounce back very quickly and can feel better within hours, but they shouldn't expose their germs during this critical time and honestly I feel they are somewhat immune-suppressed still and susceptible to another bug during this time. We did go to the doctor and they agreed it was ok to go back to school or get out after 24 hours of being fever free and of course up to it. My pet peeve when parents send their kids to school when they are obviously not well and EVERYONE gets sick. Not good for that child or anyone else!

for me, once the fever has broken, if my baby feels well (happy and playful) we'll usually go out. I figure most viral things, the incubation period was a week ago anyway, and she already exposed kids.

Plus, lately 90% of her fever issues have been teething.

i don't ever worry about letting them go somewhere if they just have a fever, but with mine if they are sick they are usually asleep when they have a fever. so it's not really the same thing. if they barf i wait 24 hours before going anywhere.
