While some moms give their daughters monikers after their own, it's not nearly as common as it is for fathers. Many traditional families name their sons after their fathers simply adding Junior, the third, etc. after the name.
Famous chef Giada de Laurentiis is considering naming her daughter–to–be Jade, which is the American way of saying Giada. While it's the same meaning, it's different enough to stand on its own.
Would you make your child your namesake?

Sort of. I wouldn't use my first name - it's mine and I'd rather pick something unique for my own child, but if we have a daughter, her middle name will be Kathleen. It's my middle name, my mother's first name, and my MIL's first name as well.
And sidenote - my husband absolutely DOES NOT want a child named after him. Too common a name I suppose...
1I wouldn't. Maybe their middle name...
2But I woudl use my parents or my hubby's parents.
I was named after my grandmother, who was extraordinary, so I love my name. I think a grandparent is cool, but I can't see giving my own child my name. Just too much confusion and chances are the kid would end up with a nickname to lessen confusion (a la Rory Gilmore). We toyed briefly with giving our son my maiden name as his middle name, but because of bad family blood (divorce), opted not to.
3My fiance and I want to use my last name as either the first or middle name for our kids so they have that connection. It works for either a girl or a boy and it's normal, but not too common so it works out well. I've never liked my first name, so that would not be passed on.
4My first name is sooooo common, so I wouldn't give my girl my name. I might use my middle name as her middle name though.
5My father named my sister and I so when we had our daughters he was adamant about naming them after us so we both used our names as their middle names. That way they have their own name and pops is happy.
6If we have a boy (probably are
), my boyfriend wants it named after him. It's a tradition in
his family but it kinda sucks because I only want to have one and that means I lose the fun and joy of naming my own child. Plus his dad's a deadbeat. Ugh. Maybe I should do a DearSugar on
this one.
7I plan on naming my first daughter a version of my name.
8My first name is too common in Latin households so I would never name a daughter after me. My middle name is sort of common as well but I wouldn't name her after it either.
9No, I wouldn't. I saw this on a HGTV show one time...they named the daughter after the wife and the son after the husband, and they called the kids "little beth" and "little mike". It was strange.
I think continuing another family name, be it a Grandparent or maiden name is really cool. My husband has a cousin whose name is Grayson, after Mom's maiden name. I just love it (but it'd have to be the right name. There is no way I'd name my kid after my mom's maiden name. We don't need a little Woodcock running around).
10LOL, luckyme. My mom's maiden name is Cherry, so that was obviously a no go in any form!
11Well Schnappy, it could work. But you'd have to have a girl and you would need to get her a pole for her 10th or 11th birthday. That way she'd be good and practiced before she started her inevitable career
.
12Nope, my name is boring.
13I am named after my mom (she is Susan and I am Susannah w/ the same middle and last name) and there is sooo much confusion. I get her mail at my house all the time! I do like the idea of nameing a child after a grandparent or even using mom's name as a middle name. I knew a couple, Lynn and Van, that named their children Dyllyn and Evan after themselves..kinda cool.
14schnappy and luckyme, my mom's maiden name is Lemons
We are going to give our kids our middle names. My s/o's middle name has been passed down from his grandpa and so we are not going to break the tradition. And my dad had my name picked out since he was 14 and he loves my name (and so do I) so I am going to give my daughter my middle name as hers.
My daughter's name will be: Robyn Dawn Emerson .... although the first name is subject to change
15And speaking of naming a kid after grandparents and maiden names I have decided to also use my grandma's maiden name
I wouldn't use my first name.......
But my middle name was given to me because it's both of my grandmother's middle names. If I were to ever have a girl, I think I'd give her the same middle name as well.
16No, I would not. I don't like when people name children after themselves or relatives. Give them their own name! A middle name is another story.
17My husband and I plan on giving our girl my first name for two reasons:
1.) I love the nickname Andy for a girl but I hate all the standard names it comes from Andrea (hubs' ex girlfriend)...and my full name is Alexandria but I go by Alex...so there is little chance for confusion.
2.) My goddaughter was named after me and she is the best child EVER...they said when they named her after me they wanted her to be a good girl like me (that meant a lot to me when I was 13)...I would love to do the same for her. She goes by her middle name, so no confusion.
*also, I used to HATE naming kids after parents, but Gilmore Girls lessened my hatred for it.
18Well, I did it in a fashion - my oldest son's first name is my maiden name. I don't think that I'd give my name directly to a child though - I've had enough problems with people being able to spell my name (it's not THAT hard) that I wouldn't want to put my daughter through it.
19i think giada/jade is a very cute touch
20I am for sure naming my future daughter after my mother and grandmother which also happens to be my name as well.
21I was named after my grandmother (my first name) and grandfather (my middle name). My first name also happens to be my mothers so I am naming my child after her grandmother (my mother) and her grandfather (my father) which will also be my name. Hopefully she will continue it!
I also plan on using all family names for my future children, I am very traditional. And I love men's names for girls middle names as well!
No, I wouldn't use my name for my daughter. It is part of our tradition (ethnically) to name children after their grandparents (starting from the husband's parents and alternating). I don't mind being traditional like that but I guess it is because they names were nice. We actually used my father's name and changed it to the female version for my daughter. The naming process was easy for my husband and I but friends of ours are getting creative and not being as traditional which is fine.
22My name is a variation of my mom's first name and then a middle name that goes back several generations. I would have no problem naming a daughter after me. I would probably choose my mom's name rather than my variation, though.
23My mom and I have the same middle name. I am game for that but I don't think I would name my child after myself. I would want her to have her own identity.
24If I were to ever name my child after me, I would alter the name a bit or add additional letters if necessary. It would be pretty confusing if we had the same names, though.
25Many friends and relatives wanted me to give my daughter my name. I did not. I know that she likes having her own first name.
26maybe the middle name. i don't like my name anyway it's too overused !
