Entering parenthood means acknowledging mortality.
Prior to having children most people don't give a will much thought, but when wee ones make their debut it's important that the parents plan guardianship and allocation of their assets. Otherwise, family battles and courtroom drama can ensue.
Surprisingly, Heath Ledger did not update his will after having daughter, Matilda with former fiancee, Michelle Williams. Luckily, People reports that the deceased actor's dad Kim Ledger said,
Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family. They will be taken care of and that's how Heath would want it to be.

How do you even get that started? Is it expensive?
1We have a will, but need to update it since the birth of our son. It's definitely on our to do list, right after we get his college education fund started later this week.
2I'm a legal assistant in the Wills and Estate department of a law firm and I can not stress how important it is for people to have a Will. I've seen first hand the diasters that can happen when people die without having made a Will.

4i know i shouldn't judge, especially since i don't know the details AT ALL of the situation, but even if Heath didn't have an updated will shouldn't all of his money/possessions gone to Matilda? you would think his father would have just put everything into a trust for her or something (which he may have, i don't know. just the way he phrased it made it seem like that wasn't the case.)
5Yep we have done ours. It isn't very expensive LaDolceVita. Well worth it, obviously, but it's one of those things on the to-do list that seems a bit overwhelming.
We didn't allow our kids to have anything until they were 30 I think. If I had received a hunk of money at 18 years old it would've been long gone before I knew the value of it.
6It's extremely easy to create a will. As long as you follow your state's rules on will requirements (attested, notarized, number of witnesses, etc) you can do your own.

8I don't have a will because I am not married and I have no kids but I've always said that I will get a will when I have my first child.
9I sadly have nothing to leave my kids. But I should try to set up guardianship just in case.
10I have been reminding my husband that we need to get to it since I was pregnant with my now 5mo old son. But it's one of those things that keeps getting put off. Hopefully I can stress to him how necessary it really is and we can get it taken care of soon.
