Just when you cleared out the bisphenol A baby bottles and recalled toys, now a study shows that phthalates, the chemicals that make plastics flexible and are used in fragrance making are a cause for concern.

An Associated Press article said a small study shows that the products you use to freshen up baby — from shampoo to lotion — can potentially cause reproductive problems. To see what the study found, read more.
It said:

In the study, they were found in elevated levels in the urine of babies who'd been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with baby products.

Phthalates (pronounced thowl-ates) are under attack by some environmental advocacy groups, but experts are uncertain what dangers, if any, they might pose. The federal government doesn't limit their use, although California and some countries have restricted their use.

Animal studies have suggested that phthalates can cause reproductive birth defects and some activists believe they may cause reproductive problems in boys and early puberty in girls.

I am so scared about this! I couldn't breastfeed and used plastic bottles from day one, and am terrified that my daughter will be sterile or have reproductive disorders as a result. I do wish we lived in less complicated times and didn't have to wait and see what all the conveniences of our age will produce in generations just born.

I'm so glad this is getting into the mainstream!!! My sister read an article about this 5 yrs ago when she was pregnant with her oldest and went to using all natural fragrance free products and checking labels - according to the article she read sometimes when a product label says "fragrance" it means there are phthalates even if the label does not say phthalates!!! Also, if you have any question call or email the manufactures to ask what their products contain!!!

I'm glad this is turning up mainstream. We've always known about these dangerous ingredients. (I googled every ingredient when I was pregnant with my first)

They have really inexpensive all-natural/organic products from LuckyVitamin.com. We order from them every other month or so. Jason Organics makes an awesome smelling shampoo for kids...

What about Burt's Bees? Are those products safe? It's crazy because the Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo has been around for 1,000 years and now this is just coming out.

LilRuck - thanks for the suggestions - anyone else know of any product lines?

Lilsugar, you should post articles about hormones in foods causing premature puberty. This is a HUGE problem that nobody wants to face.

Lovehenry we use Jason's Organics, Tom's of Maine toothpaste (w/out flouride), Aubry's dish/laundry soap, and SOME of the Kiss My Face products (their bar soap did awesome on my son's eczema flare up).

Avalon Organics is great too but they tend to be a bit more pricey. Hope that helps! VitaCost is another good place to get products.

(And if you're interested for yourself, Erth Minerals makes awesome makeup, chemical free)

wow these are scary times when you have to worry about what chemicals are in the food you eat, the household cleaners you use and now even the shampoo to wash your children! the FDA should be paying more attention!

Seems like nothing is safe anymore. We use Dr. Bronner's soap.

    Hi-

I work on the Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies Baby business and we understand your concerns. But it's worth clearing up a few things, since this is an important issue for any parent...

We use only one of the many phthalates -- diethylphthalate (DEP) -- in some of our personal care products, as a component of fragrance preparations. Both the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, an independent, nonprofit panel of scientists and physicians who assess the safety of personal care product ingredients in the U.S., and the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP), the body that advises the European Union Commission on safety matters related to cosmetics, have determined DEP to be safe as used. DEP has been extensively researched and is not linked to reproductive toxicity or endocrine disruption.

The pictures and some of the blog comments posted here are simply inaccurate as to which of our products contain DEP. But, again, we know that people are concerned, so even though DEP is widely considered safe as used, we'd encourage you and your readers to call 1-866-JNJ-BABY to ask our consumer contact center any questions about specific products.

    Thanks!

    Iris Grossman

I know of a product! Arbonne International is a Swiss Health and Welness Company that only makes pure, safe and beneficial products. They have an incredible skin care line for babies and young children (or people with sensitive skin). I love it because I don't worry about the ingredients. They don't use mineral oil, fillers, dyes, perfumes, animal products or by-products and they don't test on animals. It is called ACB - Arbonne Baby Care and can be found at www.wellnessfortheworld.myarbonne.com. Go to "Shop Online" and click the Baby Care Picture. They have Hair and Body Wash, Baby Oil, Diaper Rash Cream and Sunscreen. It is really GREAT!
