the mornings with the kids and I have them while he works in the afternoons. Our children might not know who is driving them to a birthday party or picking them up from a playdate, but they are certain mom or dad will be there.

I loved this!! This would completely erase the guilt a lot of moms about having working. As far as childcare, your one point about seeing Dad is such a good one. If you have to work around each other's schedules for awhile, do it. It will only be for a season and you will find something along the road that works for you.

not good timing: freaking out about having to go back to work full time and not being able to afford child care even on 2 good salaries, with a minimum of 7 hours between us and all family members.

We own our own company and I'm one of two techs so not working isn't really an option. Fortunately I LOVE my job. Loving what I do an knowing that my son is in really good hands (my mom and MIL each watch him for two days each week) helps me not ever feel guilty. My schedule is pretty flexible and I'm sure that helps as well.
