10 Reasons I Feel Guilty For Being a Working Mom

I love being a working mom, but having kids can certainly pull on a woman's heartstrings. Though my husband and I have juggled our children and careers without enlisting outside help for five years now, there have been moments when our hectic life has been a bit much for me. On those occasions, I wonder if I would have been a better mother had I stayed home. To see why, check out our slideshow.

Ultimately, my working has been the best thing for me and my family so I don't regret pursuing a career.

The last couple months while at my job as a secretary in an investments office, clients asked if I would return to work after baby was born. When I said "No- I'm going to be with my baby," SEVERAL older female clients said that it was their biggest regret in life to have worked outside the home when their children were little. That made a huge impression on me. These ladies had retirement accounts but lots of lifetime regret to go with them. Ten years later, we now have five children and manage somehow to live on my husband's very humble salary. Learning to live cheap and sacrifice lots of "stuff" for the sake of investing in my children is really no sacrifice at all when I consider the big picture.

Know many works at home moms and dads who let themselves get taken advantage of by people wanting them to drop what they are doing and come to the need of their problem or come join them in what they want to do.

I wish this post was called "10 Reasons I Feel Guilty For Being a Working Parent".

Being a working mom is very, very hard. The woman who wrote this article seems to have the option of doing a lot from home - I wish I had that flexibility! I miss my son so much while I am at work, and I would do pretty much anything to be home with him. Hopefully being a SAHM will be a reality for me soon!

Lil, I would love to know more about how you and your hubby have managed to both have careers and juggle that and caring for your children without outside help! THAT would make a great article, IMO!

Yes it's sad to miss those things but guess what? Somebody has to pay the mortgage and the bills and buy food or there won't be a happy family or home to go to after work and on weekends. Also what if your husband loses his job or dies or something? Stay at home moms will be screwed with all those years of no work experience and outdated skills.

i am looking forward to your post tomorrow because this one made me a little sad for you...before having my daughter i had a job i enjoyed, nothing i loved and was truly passionate about so i had no problem leaving it and feel blessed everyday that i get to be home with my daughter. i think it would have been much harder for me to stay home if i was leaving a job that "completed me."

anonymous — The intro says that I am running the exact post you mentioned tomorrow...scroll down to the bottom and it's in italics. Working is a double edge sword, there are the guilty moments and the great things that come from having a career.

How 'bout an article on 10 Things I Love About Being a Working Mom? Seems like the media is always focused on the guilt working moms feel - why not focus some on the positives they feel. The author starts the story by saying: "I love being a working mom." Let's explore that some more instead of rehashing the same ol' guilt scenario.

that's sad! but, know that your kids are getting the best in life because mommy AND daddy work. and, they'll be fine - they have their daddy during the day and mommy at night. think of how lucky they are to have both parents so active in their lives :)

I feel your pain on every one of these... I am a working mom and it kills me to leave my lil girl every day!! She's in good hands with her grandmother, but I secretly fear that she will prefer her grammy over her mommy. I wish quitting were an option for me, but I have many years of Army service obligation to fulfill! I just try to do my best to spend lots of quality time with my daughter when I'm home.

I just couldnt miss those things, or regret like that. Not for a job. I dont have kids yet, but are planning to be a stay at home mom, it will take alot of planning and budgeting but totally worth it. To me.
